Crawley manager Francis Vines groaned: "We should have won that by a street. After we lost to Stevenage, Graham Westley said it was ‘a 1-0 thrashing’. Well, we just gave them a 1-1 thrashing!"

"We played well and created plenty of chances. I was disappointed with their goal. Although it was a good finish, they had already almost got through with a similar long ball 30 seconds earlier."

Vines said that with hindsight, it was not ideal for Marney, who had just missed a simple chance, to take the first-half penalty awarded for a handball.

"I suppose now we will say he should have left it to someone else but he was big and brave enough to pick up the ball and want it."

"Maurice Harkin is our designated penalty-taker when Charlie MacDonald is not on the pitch but he let Danny have it."

Vines said his side should have had an earlier penalty when Marney was fouled in the area, while a second handball might have been given against a Fleet player in the second half.

"Danny was going up for a free header and the guy just creamed him. In a way, that may have influenced the referee to give us the one we did get, which I felt was more ball-to-hand."

"The game petered out a little in the second half after Simon Wormull went off injured but I never thought Gravesend would score – except for when Joe Dolan tried to give them a goal with a back-pass, but Phil Smith made a great save."
