Mcarthy

Fleet fan

Recommended Posts

As far as i'm concerned yes i do think your the only fleet fan who feels that. I think he brings experience & a calm influence to the back four.

True, is is a shame Shearer won't be back, but i think McCarthy is better.

I think that Mcarthy is a quality experienced defender who is a great addition to our squad. Obviously it would of been nice for us if Shearer stayed as i heard he was quite a good joker which kept the players in such good spirits.

However, surley Popovic is more of a talking point than Mcarthy!!

He nearly cost us a couple times by trying to do one to many things!

Also it could be he is unpopular with the players because of this as i saw pop n jay having a lil go at each other in the middle of the field during the game.

By sayin this im not saying he is a poor defender, cause to be honest i think he is a good defender, hes got a great touch to bring the ball down, good in the air, reasonably fast, usualy great tackling also looks quite comitted to every thing.

I feel our best defense is

Pullen

Skinner - Pop - Macca - Gledhill

Think you'll find that he's saved more goals with his positioning & awarness than he has made mistakes!!

A good edition to the squad!!

I was actually watching from behind the goal for the entire game as i have for every fleet game for the past 3 years 'Fleet Fan'.

I feel he lacks a little pace, a little like Pennock did, but for Fleet fan to describe him as 'utter [****!!****]' is clearly stupid.

Personally I'm quite a fan of Porter from what I've seen of him, but his susceptibility to injury is a concern. Overall, I'd say there isn't a lot between our four centre-backs (omitting Shearer, given his seemingly inevitable exit) at the moment, although I agree that Popovic's over-elaboration is something he needs to cut out. Having said that, they all have their weaknesses (e.g. Moore's tendency to play long balls).

P.S. Did anyone see McCarthy's profile in yesterday's programme? Apparently he used to play for 'Wickham'...

Yeah but you only liked them once they released A Design for Life.
Bet you weren't there at the start in 1990 like me: leopard print, kohl, situationist slogans, political polemic, despair, glamour and optimism, New Art Riot....oh.....sorry......I seem to have picked up on the wrong argument.

New fans? Old fans? Who really cares... run along with your juvenile arguments children, you're boring a lot of us.

Besides which, I've been on here longer than you!!

Unpopular? Behave yourself. Obviously you didn't see Proth shouting at Roy or Conkers' constant shouting at Moose when they play together.

Pop could be what we have been missing for some time, a ball playing centre half, Mooreo is very Aaron Barnett like in his distribution, at least Pop gets the ball down. Remember he has been playing at a lower level for a while so will be used to more time on the ball, like Jukebox was last year.

The jury appears to be out with regard to McCarthy, he does organise well but does lack pace as jc mentioned. Maybe Pop and him will work better as Zeljko does have pace to cover that Mooreo doesn't.

I do agree that a settled centre back pairing would be far better than chopping and changing.

The truth is that the only reason our best centre half for years, Shearer, left the Club is because he is a bit of a character, outspoken and needs man-managing.

Any player that stands up in the dressing room and has this type of personality, will be "outed" by Fordy.

And, we didn't even get a fee for him ! How these other clubs must laugh at us.

As for McCarthy, a few years ago he was a top class defender (I saw him at Wycombe a few times), but now he's past his sell-by date, slow, overweight and overpaid. OK in the division below but not in the Conference.

Good luck to Lee Shearer, a top guy allowed to slip away by lack of man-management skills.

Chris Moore was better than Shearer last season and The Fridge was immense in our promotion season so to call Shearer "our best centre half for years" is overegging it a bit....however with all the players that have left us over the past few years Shearer joins the very small number that would still get in the side.

I reckon Mark Bentley, Liam Hatch, Lee Shearer and maybe Ben Walshe on a good day.
