Hello y'all, I'm stuck in work for at least another 2 hours. Then off work till Wednesday! Rest of today - find a copy of that excellent organ (ha!) the NLP which I will finish in about 2 minutes, as per usual. Thence home to finish wrapping and finally to hit the beers and the lovely Irish whiskey I've bought myself for Christmas. Mmmmm lovely <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

BRAVE STONES BOW OUT OF FA YOUTH CUP AT ANFIELD
22/12/2004

Non-League interest in this season’s FA Youth Cup ended on Tuesday night when mighty Liverpool comfortably saw off Ryman League Premier Division club Wealdstone at Anfield.

But what a day and what an occasion for the young Stones, despite the final 6-0 scoreline.

Wealdstone’s youth set-up, which is a scheme in conjunctioin with Stanmore College, has been a huge success.

Already many players have come through to become valuable members of Gordon Bartlett’s senior side, which is what it’s all about.

Francis Joseph, a former professional with numerous clubs, but most notably Wimbledon and Brentford, is in charge of the Stones’ under-18 side and he was delighted by the way the Premiership giants treated his team both on and off-the-field.

And as a nice gesture before kick-off the Wealdstone squad placed a wreath at the Hillsborough Memorial.

In the end, as could be expected, Wealdsone’s youngsters were no match for a Liverpool side managed by former England semi-professional international boss John Owens.

And it will be the Reds who will now face Spurs in the fourth round, thanks to a hat trick from Republic of Ireland Youth international striker Conal Platt.

Liverpool's other goalscorers were Danny Guthrie, Karl Noon and defender Jordan Holmes.

It was an excellent night's entertainment and Wealdstone deserve credit and did very well and had great support from a loyal following in the Kop.

Wealdstone: Mitchell Swain, Lee Holland, Rodney Hicks, Eric Donald Gbio, Todd Allison, Carl Martin, Sam Sharples, John Christian, Mohammed Jimbah, Mark Thompson, Alex Augustine.

Last week the only other remaining non-League side in the FA Youth Cup, UniBond League Premier Division club Burscough, bowed out to Coca-Cola Championship side Preston North End at Victoria Park

However, the result may well have hinged on a controversial decision by the referee to dismiss Burscough skipper Sean Nightingale on the hour-mark for a second bookable offence. Certainly his boot was high as he went to clear up-field but he appeared to be attempting to play the ball and the Tarleton-based player had to be restrained by team-mates as he realised his dream of leading the Linnets to victory against his local League club had ended.

Up until then there had been little to choose between the sides. After the highly rated Ashley Parilon had fired a free kick just wide in the 4th minute the home side began to take control, playing some delightful football.

Preston eventually got into their stride and went in front on 38 minutes as Parillon took a leaf out of Thierry Henry’s book by taking a quick free-kick while Burscough were organising their defensive wall and finding the unguarded corner of the net.

After the sending-off Preston came close to making it 2-0 when Peter Owens cleared Anthony Warriner’s effort off the line. But their ploy of playing out the final minutes nearly came unstuck when Karl Ledsham’s thunderbolt for the Linnets cannoned back off a post with virtually the last kick of the game.

But, despite the defeat, Burscough’s youngsters can rightly be proud of their performance, not only on the night against Preston, but also in another excellent run in the competition.
