This week: Liam Roche

Name: Liam Roche

From: Slough, England

Age: 24

Club Team: Slough Town FC

National Team: Ireland

Why support those teams'

Because it's my home town, and I've been to a few

Premiership games and it all feels sanitized. I prefer

standing in decrepit 2000 capacity hellholes with no

cover in the pouring rain with 300 other masochists.

It's fun and you can get some proper banter going with

the opposition. Ireland? Well half my family's from

there and I was told that if I didn't support them

during the 1990 World Cup I couldn't go to Thorpe

Park. But sentiment does generally kick in with

England as well, and if they meet I'm too blah to have

an opinion.

Do you go to many games'

Last season I think I missed three out of forty two

league games and all eight cup games we were in.

Before that I was living in Birmingham and didn't see

anything unless Pompey were in town.

Which teams do you truly hate'

In order: Wycscum Wanderers, Windsor & Eton, Woking,

Hayes, Staines Town, Maidenhead United, Leeds and

Southport

Favorite and Least Favorite Stadium - Excluding that

of your club

I love Birmingham City's St. Andrews ground - no where

else can you get abused by ten year olds and have

boiling hot coffee rain down on you from the upper

tier of the stand. Worst? Technically we're

groundsharing Windsor & Eton's Stag Meadow (otherwise

known as the Black Hole Of Charisma) so I'm picking

that. Also the Croydon Sports Arena, Banstead

Athletic's ground and Cheshunt's ground. I've been to

many crappy non-league grounds so I could go on.

Best game ever seen'

Windsor & Eton 1 Slough 4. 2 nil up at half time, 3-1

up and reduced to ten men, three more red cards

leaving it 9 men a side and Ian Hodges finishing up

his hat-trick. Plus a punch up between the Windsor

keeper and Hodges in the bar afterwards. Priceless.

Best goal ever seen'

Danny Bolt's bundled equaliser against Cardiff in the

FA Cup First Round in the 97/98 season. Not

particularly good, but it always stick in my mind.

Should have won the game as well.

First game attended'

Wycombe vs Slough back when the Scum got promoted.

8,000 in a ground designed at the time for 7,000 and

probably the same again on the hills outside watching

the game. We lost.

Worst supporting experience'

Losing to Southport in the FA Trophy Semi Final second

leg. We lost on away goals, the goal was blatantly

offside, the heavy handed Merseyside police arrested

about a dozen of our fans and Southport delayed the

start of the game by half an hour while some pathetic

local radio DJs made desperate appeals for the locals

to come out. The ground was a [censored] shithole as well

and the weather was [****!!****].

Funniest supporting experience'

This season, can't remember who we were playing but

one of our strikers hit a weak looking shot which was

dribbling slowly towards the keeper. The keeper went

down, thought it was going wide and left it, only to

see it sneak inside the post. A true 'ground swallow

me up moment' for him, bloody funny for us.

Seriously, are you ever going to see good things from

your team'

Nope. We have no ground of our own, no money to

support ourselves & a chairman who's on the verge of

walking away due to the [censored] dickish attitude of

the council. Maybe in the nest twenty years but not

anytime soon.

Many thanks to Liam for his contribution. I was really pleased - I fully expected my first email to be from a supporter of a huge club who doesn't attend many games - and I got the polar opposite. Remember, send me your entry by clicking my name at the bottom of the page.
