Ryman Premier League Tuesday Dec 21st away Vs Billericay

A cold miserable day was what met us, as we alighted from the coach in lovely Eseex (Where we actually won last time!!!) Unfortunately we were over an hour early so typical games of guess the team- and trying to get Matt Miller to wear a santa hat with pigtails (Which he did- and looked quite pretty in!) ensued. As the names crackled over the intercom, we discovered that Mr Radford was correct in his predictions, and the team was the same as Saturday except the return of Alex Haddow from suspension to replace Danny Steer. The team therefore was:- Allaway, Carbon, Murphy (1), Daly © Saulsbury, Haddow, Spencer, Harris, Hodges, Murphy (2), Metcalfe.

Slough started the brighter of the two teams and some good attacking play down the right led to our first chance; a cross from Josy which flew just over. The game settled down and the next attack was roughly 10 minutes later when Matt Murphy tried an audacious shot from 35 yards which just flew wide of Gothard’s right post. We then began a period of play where neither team seemed able to string more that 2 passes together, Michael Murphy made a good block, Shaun Allaway saved a few crosses, whilst all the Slough attacks came via Alex and Josy harrying the ‘ricay defence down the wings. However, the Essex jinx struck yet again and as we headed towards half time a well placed cross from the ‘ricay right hand side found Cousins who smacked the ball past Allaway. The next attack of note was on 44 minutes as a Harris free kick from the right found Michael Murphy who chested the ball down and half-volleyed towards the ‘ricay goal, unfortunately Gothard made his only real save of the game and tipped the ball over the bar, just as the Rebels behind the goal were beginning to celebrate. Half Time 1-0.

Chips, Burger and a chat with Sam Shephard (Going into hospital in January- hope you are back soon mate) later, and not forgetting some more Miller, Moller and Veli shooting practice, we kicked off with an unchanged team. Slough started the second half excellently, and despite some interesting refereeing (A freekick after Alex Haddow was taken down 2 yards inside the box- various fouls on Hodges and Haddow going unpunished- including Ian being thrown to the ground) Slough were the dominant team, Hodgey was tackled by the last defender as he was about to shoot, Daly headed a corner just wide and things were looking up for the small but very vocal support behind the ‘ricay goal. Matt Seedel came on for Ian Hodges (Who had already received a yellow card because a Billericay midfielder ducked into his foot) and gave 100% despite not getting particularly good service. Despite this pressure, things always looked ominous, and when a cross came in from the left and Allaway seemed to punch the ball onto Nathan Elder’s head the resulting goal was the final nail in the coffin(78mins). Veli Hakki came on to replace Harris, and despite some tough tackling and good attacking vision, he was unable to resurrect a Slough side who had already lost. The final chance fell to Matt Murphy who was tackled in the final minute as he ran at the ‘ricay goal.

Man Of The Match: Alex Haddow (Followed closely by Matt Miller in his Santa hat)
