I am absolutely with Ian on this one. The squad is designed for 3-5-2. If you look at the back three they each add something different:

Daly is a collusus in the air and leads the line

Saulsbury is Mr. Composure, assured, great tackler and one of the best passers

Smurph 1 - has the pace and the agression.

I think forcing them into a flat four would cause us more problems than it would solve.

The difficulty is this season ensuring that Haddow and Carbon have enough licence to get forward which is probably why Eddie opts for two more defensive minded midfielders. When the wing backs get pegged back it leaves the strikers isolated which must be why Hodges gets frustrated. We could also do with resolving exactly who the favoured forward pairing is.

I think we need to have the confidence to go and impose our style on the oppposition. That is what we did against Dover and Harrow in spells and it lead to five goals.

IMO I wouldn't be comfortable with Carbon's defending as an out and out right-back or Saulsbury as co-centre-half with Daly. I think he would probably work better alongside Daly AND Murphy who are better in the air. Having said that I've not seen Saulsbury play in a 4-4-2 formation (I think). Apart from that, it could work <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Matt - are you suggesting that Saulsbury's not good in the air?! I agree that there's few defenders in this league that are as commanding as Daly but I'm not sure I'd put anyone else above Saulsbury in our squad.
