Saints 0 Eastbourne 0

This was a bit of a scrappy affair but it was also a game we would have lost 2 months ago. Against a team who had won 6 and drawn 1 of their last 7, this was a good result, even allowing for the fact we could and should have nicked it at the end. It is clear that the team are now playing with spirit, playing for each other and things are definitely on an upward turn.

Bastock was again outstanding and the defence is looking more solid every game. The midfield still needs strengthening, though, as does the forward line.

Looking forward to Cambridge on Sunday. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/top.gif" alt="" />

Hi Woody.

Bastock certainly makes a difference as he leads the back 4 very well indeed. He didn't have a lot to do on Saturday otherwise. I recall that he took out dangerous cross from Rowland in the first half and calmly tipped over a header from the same player in the second.

For me, a welcome point that could have been more from a very dull game.

Walshe is clearly carrying an injury, Cousins was below par, Davis & Marwa are very similar players and the midfield doesn't function terribly well when they both have an 'ordinary' game. We are very thinly spread.

Eastbourne didn't overly impress me although their No 6 was my 'Man Of A Very Ordinary Match'. They played a spoiling game. That said, I thought that they looked like a pub side at their place a couple of months ago.

Still can't believe that Beech didn't just roll the ball in at the death, and thought it was going to be worse, when they went streaking up the pitch from that and carved us wide open.

He definitely looks a little shy in front of goal, I don't think Clarke would have tried to square had he been in the same position...

Agree with most of what's bin said - but just to add my two pees worth:

Bastock looks very capable

Back four looked solid although sometimes Hooper turns up in some interesting areas of the pitch and Eastbourne do not have the most potent attack in the leauge.

Mid-field still needs a ball winning hard man and more cohesion with the forwards

Not sure about Davis - final ball a bit iffy sometimes but maybe it wasn't his kind of game.

I also thought Walshe did not have his best game.

Beech not the most natural goal scorer in the world (or Hertfordshire) but works hard and does more good than harm

Clarke again works hard but could do with more decent ball in the penalty area.

All in all left the park feeling happier - shame about the rest of the results.

I just thought he looked a bit leggy, though still had a decent game.

When he gets back to full fitness though, he'll be back to his mercurial best!

Davis is tricky and a handful, he pulls the full-backs all over the park when he's out wide, but I think he loses a bit of composure when they try to rough him up.

It is indeed all ifs and buts.

Still, we are dangerous from set pieces, but I think Scott Cousins will be a major miss when he is suspended. His delivery is outstanding.

Do you know how long we have got Elphick for on work experience?
