Canvey Supporters 2-2 Kingsfield Casuals

Tonight’s 9-a-Side match between Canvey Supporters and Kingsfield Casuals finished 2-2 after a fiercely contested game. Kingsfield opened the scoring in the opening minutes whilst the Canvey team were still learning to play together, a ball down the wing that was crossed low into the box and slotted past keeper Mark Chittock. A lot of new faces were included in the line up, though it didn’t take Canvey long to start playing some brilliant passing football. Craig Smith and Rob Harvey were dominating the wings, whilst Riece Speight and Gareth Lawrence controlling the middle of the pitch.

Canvey’s equaliser soon came from a great through ball from Speight, which Gary Dover smacked home from a tight angle passed the diving Kingsfield keeper. By this point, Canvey were passing the ball fluently and twice hit the post, as well as testing the keeper on numerous occasions. The most notable efforts was a curling shot from Garetht Lawrence that looked destined for the top right hand corner, and a rocket from Craig Smith that was only inches over the crossbar.

Defensively Canvey looked sound, with father and son Luke and Dave Chittock along with Glen Eckett ensuring that Kingsfield weren’t allowed to have any serious shots on target. Mark Chittock in goal didn’t put a foot wrong all night, and although was rarely called into action, he dealt with anything that came his way.

The second half carried on from where the first left off, with Canvey pushing forward in numbers and looking dangerous. The pressure soon told when another through ball from Riece Speight sent Dover through who coolly slotted home his and Canvey’s second.

As the half wore on, Canvey were becoming frustrated at some dubious referring decisions, especially a penalty appeal that was turned down when Speight was pulled back just before he was about to slide the ball into an empty net. This didn’t stop Canvey’s passing game, but it did allow Kingsfield more chance to push for an equaliser.

With only 30 seconds to go, Kingsfield were awarded a free kick 10 yards out after an initial Canvey free kick appeal was surprisingly turned down. Canvey were short of numbers at the back, and a clever free kick enabled Kingsfield to cruelly equalise with a crashing shot that flew into the back of the net.

Canvey will feel that on another night this game could have been all over by half time, and I’m sure Kingsfield will have been surprised by the work rate and commitment the Canvey fans showed. Bearing in mind that the opposition regulary play together in the Southend Sunday Premier Division, Canvey can feel proud of their performance, but will still be disappointed at the final result.

Overall, this was a very competitive match that was enjoyed by all, and a replay will be scheduled for the 2005 for the two teams to meet again. Thanks for everyone who played, hopefully next time we can get a squad of around 14 to allow plenty of substitutions.

Canvey Supporters Line Up:

D Glen Eckett

D Dave Chittock

DM Luke Chittock

RW Craig Smith
