If the rumours are true and Mr Clarke is back in a Town shirt at the weekend, I for one (and possibly it seems, the only one!) wouldn't be too upset.

The facts are that he's the club's leading ever goalscorer and was our top striker when we won the League.

However, it is true that he can have attitude problems, and that he rubs some people up the wrong way. For that example also read David Allen and he hasn't done much wrong since his return.

The trouble is that footballers are hugely different. You have the 100%, no moaning players like Steve Baldwin and Lee Smith and then you have the Clarkes of this world with their often petulant attitude. As long as you don't have too more than a couple in your side you should (hopefully) be alright. I look at Newcastle United with Bellamy and Kluivert (sic?), two undoubted quality goalscorers with well known attitude difficulties. We just have to hope the management are strong enough to cope with it.

I'd be interested in the views of some of the players that come on this site. I can't imagine playing against Clarke is an enjoyable experience, even if he can be a little one-dimensional at times.

I think it's a decision that will either be a great success or bomb badly. Although something clearly had to be done. Asa and Seb don't look good enough in my opinion, Lee Smith (Concord and Romford games aside) has had a hugely disappointing season, and we play arguably our best goalscorer on the right wing.

I cautiously welcome Clarke's return but I think we'll be able to judge better the intelligence of the decision after about ten games.

Thoughts?

Not very many at all, certainly not as many as he should. But he's a proven goalscorer at this level and in recent weeks that's been a big problem for us. I hope he recaptures his 'first spell' form again.

My opinion is that Clarkey upsets the changing room with his arrogant, obnoxious and "dont care" attitude.

Yes he can score goals but then so can many other players at step 4/5 but will I am sure they will care more about the club than the the money.....

At ESL level surely its more important to have a great team spirit rather than individual "big time charlies" like we did last year (Cove,Clarke,Brotherton etc) because players with big time attitudes UPSET morale within their team.

I believe that Kevin Riley and Lee Smith would be very well together......we dont need Danny Clarke.

Well said that man (or woman!). Football is a game of opinions - everyone is entitled to theirs but at the end of the day it it up to JC what players he brings back or not and we should just get behind whoever is on the pitch in every game.

The problem as I see it is that with Clarke in the side our game degenerates into a one-dimensional 'knock it forward to Clarkey'. If teams push up and he beats the offside trap he misses far too many one-on-ones. More often than not he gets caught miles offside and starts to whinge at all and sundry.

He is reluctant to pass, even when a colleague is far, far better placed and the pass is the easier option.

He did very well in his first season but teams are now wise to him. His record in his second spell was disappointing - three goals in 15 appearances.

Sorry. If we do sign him again it's a retrograde step in my view.

Of course now that I've said all that he'll probably win us the League, the League Cup and the Grand National <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Look its bad enough having all this talk of Clarke coming back, per-lease dont make outrageous quotes like "Riley up front"!

I saw him play against Clapton and the guy missed so many it was unbelievable. That is not a goalscorer! A goalscorer only needs one chance, Clarky needs 10. His attitude is sh*t and he only wants to go back to Enfield because Edgware are sh*t. He'll upset the applecart at Enfield and then you definately won't win the league. Any decent centre half will mark him out the game. All he has is a bit of pace. Stay tight or play with a sweeper and you will nullify him.

Three defeats in three big games. I did not make Hendon and would not expect to beat them but was at the Abbey and Enfield games. In both games, Town has most of the possession, played the better football, but created few good chances up-front. Smith works hard in every game but needs more support but Ndombe has not impressed at all. He seems to go backwards (when he manages to keep the ball) and the attacks lose impetus because of this. What Town would give for a Danny Heale or a young(er) Gary Abbott. They deffinitely need a skilful, intelligent striker so they can put a run together to threaten Abbey. As for Clarke. His last return to the club should be enough to make most peoples minds up. He is skillful and quick but, yes, as stated previously, defenders are more wise to him now. He is not a team player and does not get through 10% of the work that Smith does.

New, big-name striker please!

Absolutely right. Clarkey is very one-dimesional as stated above, as as was shown in our second season as well asby his second spell with us, other teams know about him and can easily nullify the crude tactics that we used with him.

I've only seen one game this season but Ndombe did not impress me one little bit. Smith is fine, and Nyman looks excellent. It is also importany to have goals coming from midfield, and Rudi seems to have been doing this, but I'd like to see Brad back in midfield too.
