Apparently when we shout "what about the ten yards, ref" at some idiot who let's the wall stand 6 yards from the ball we are merely confusing the official.

 

According to ex ref Philip Don, quoted on the bbc website:

 

"Referees have been told to ask the player 'do you want to take the quick free-kick?' or 'do you want me to get the wall back 9.15 metres?'

 

Of course they won't be able to count on their fingers any more.....

Don't talk to me about the ten yard rule, OR Graham Poll for that matter !
