ANON' POSTS - DEBATE

[color:"blue"]A compromise suggestion (I don't know it's possible perhaps David Holden could advise) .... How about if, under the name of the poster the next line could show the I.P. address of the poster, then we could all see if the mischief making is coming from the same source. [/color]

The IP address is logged and is available to the administrators. AFAIK there are no plans to make this information generally available.

I see no problem sooner the better.

Good point seaside. I try to curb the impulse to bite back at some of the idiotic things that are posted by anonymous fools, as I think to respond only makes them more likely to do it again.

As far as vague nom-de-plumes go, PeterW, I do not know who half of the regulars are, whether they are young or old, male or female, and frankly I don't care, because the discussions I have had with everyone on the whole make me feel that I belong to a band of friends that share the same passion (i.e. the ongoing survival and sucess of our club). Registration only has merit, but I would miss the occasional drop-ins from fans of other clubs (the reasonable ones that is).

Perhaps we could have a go at requesting deletion by a moderator of malicious posts if proposed and seconded by at least two registered members?

And maybe we could all be a bit restrained and not respond to the rubbish?

I think that everyone that posts on this forum should go by a name that identifys them.I dont think that people would stop posting if they were made to,but I would like to talk to a name or somebody I can relate to.Go back 10 posts and see what I mean, that anon post really let all you other ANON posters down, didnt it.

Here at Fleet we are plagued by anon posters spounting " sack Ford" every time we have a poor result (which is all too often recently).

However, this has to be balanced by the forum being open to all, even if you disagree with the point of view.

Usually a healthy debate ensues, and the anon posters normally get bored and go elsewhere.

I think on balance as long as the profanities, libels and general insults are filtered out, the forum shoulds remain open to all at present.

PS good luck with the ground plans.

AS we have had very vry few outbreaks of abusive or obscene /illegal postings on here(and all credit to the moderators)why is this a potential issue.

Unfortunately our current'live' fanbase at moment due to various circumstances is low.

Registering would reduce it further.

Anonymous posters often have a value and have less blinkered views than us dedicated fans.

It all adds to debate and interest.

I live near Forest green rovers and snatch a glimpse at their forum and occasionally post.

2 months ago they went to registration ,and now there are only about 10 people posting at the most, and there is no debate.Everyone agrees with each other. Its so polite, even the club secretary posts.Frankly its boring

Why consider change when there is no problem.

Ignore the rubbish posts-do not take the bait

I quite like the open nature of the forum. I may have registered some time ago, but to be honest just put my (almost) proper name in - overtyping "anon...". My automatic reaction is to assume comments from "Anon" not value adding and potentially mischief making. Perhaps the approach is to block offesive "Anon" posters by their IP.

I do quite like the ease with which other fans can post here with the minimum of fuss. It helps the debate / banter.

Whatever is decided, this forum is and will continue to be appreciated.

[color:"blue"] As I have stated earlier, I don't think that banning anonymous posters is the way to go. As MargateFan put in his(her)post the anonymous poster could always hide behind a vague identity.

The thought behind showing an IP address on the posting was that it would go some part of the way to show in any long thread if the views marked 'Anonymous' were from one person or from different people.

BTW - Wellsie, banning people by their IP address is not a safe way to do things, on the old MargateFC.com forum SteveP banned me and several others from posting as we all had the same IP address - one of those of the provider Freeserve (who like some other providers don't provide users with a static IP address). at least that was the reason he gave me <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/whistling.gif" alt="" />

Goes to show what I know then! But I still think I prefer the open approach, and we could all just not reply to a user we don't recognise or doesn't leave a genuine looking name and post.

Well at the least we got ONE new registered posting that was once anonymous previously.

And now we know WHO they are and now they have an I.P. address to fall back on should they step out of line.

Just going back to that obscene anon posting that was deleted. He/she posted a question."do we have to send a P.M.in order to call someone names".

I think it would be less likely that any names, called by anonymous postees ,actually would be called if they were traceable. That is just an example. There are too many cowardly but seem to feel brave people posting when they are not made accountable or cannot be traced.

Too many times these posts blurt out rumours, obscenities and other tripe knowing full well that no trace can be made. Registering would wipe most of that out. At least when those registering give out crap,as maybe I do at times,at least we are traceable.

I go to many other forums where registering is a must and it does seem more controlled that way. It would not only clean up the forum but make it more secure i.m.o.

Out of 34 posts on this subject 30 were registered and only 4 were not. This to me was a breath of fresh air. Only 1 anon post deleted and a debate that I think was worthy of this forum. I felt that with so many kosher postings it made for a clean, sensible and worthwhile debate that had great thought put into it by all.

Thats the way things should be discussed but the decision to change dosen't fall on my head and it wouldn't be my place to do so anyway. I have my particular slant to this subject but its everyones opinions that count. Whatever the outcome its been a pleasure to hear so many peoples feelings on this with the sincerity and honesty that was put in.Thank you.

Hi Cookie-please take this in the right spirit but in this politically correct world, there are some who would argue that part of your post above is racist and should be deleted.

The world has gone mad.

At least we have a forum and club to debate whatever way we chose.

Forgive me, but think we had a further reality check last night, and i'm sitting here wondering how much longer we will have a club to debate ;let alone if we post anom or not.

Its all a bit insignificant compared with the bigger picture re:the future

Where on earth is a racist remark above ? I certainly wont take that the right way. At no time am I being racist. Please show me where this is? I am most certainly not racist and I havent even thought of that in my posts. It just dosent come into it. Where on earth are you getting that from Michael.? Agree with your other comments however concerning the club but we didnt know that did we when this thread was started.

Think the Jewish term was the problem.

New debate - if somebody calls you a rude name on a message board should you then launch a campaign to make everybody register and start a long thread about it ?
