Weymouth 1 Fleet 1

Recommended Posts

A Steve McKimm goal gave the Fleet a 1 -1 draw, but the bad news is that Francis Duku was carried off on a stretcher in the first half.

As soon as I hear hod bad the injury is I will let you know.

I'm sure a neutral referee would have given us the penalty in the first half following a flying save by the Weymouth defender that any international 'keeper would've been proud of : This is not sour grapes, just a fact of life, and it should have been 1-1 at half time. As the injury to Francis shows, they spent the 1st half attempting to kick us off the park and in the 2nd were showing most of the World how many oscars they'd win in the coming season, by diving on nearly every tackle as they tired towards the end. This game was exactly the opposite of the flowing spectacle at the Camrose the previous night, and we had a perfect example why referees come from a neutral source for important things like league and cup matches. Overall the weekend looked promising as far as enthusiasm and fitness went, but when you have 2 different teams for each half with about another 6 or 7 changes during the game you cannot learn too much about form. Turn up for the Brighton game Tuesday and you may get a much better idea.

KENWAY IMPRESSES AS TERRAS FEEL THE FORCE

by Paul Baker

Monday 22 July 2002

SIMON Browne and Lee Phillips were left nursing injuries following Weymouth's latest pre-season warm-up game against Gravesend and Northfleet at the Wessex Stadium.

Both players were forced to limp out of what was a physical encounter with the newly promoted Conference side.

Browne suffered a nasty dead leg early in the first half while goal scorer Phillips aggravated an ankle injury, which he picked up at Portland in midweek.

Boss Geoff Butler said: "Gravesend were a little bit competitive to say the least and I thought they were a touch naughty at times. We were good enough to host them on their tour and I just felt that one or two of the tackles were a bit over the top.

"Losing both Simon and Lee was obviously a worry but I don't think either injury is too serious and they should be right again in a few days.

"But I guess we've got to get used to things being a bit physical and in some ways it's probably done us good."

Losing Browne so early in the contest gave Butler a chance to run his eye over Portland United trialist and former Terra, Mark Kenway.

And the manager was pleased with the islander's contribution, and that of all his trialists.

"Mark impressed me when we played Portland the other night," he said, "and I think he's a lad with plenty of potential. This game was very much a trial and error affair with lots of players playing out of position, but I was pleased with the ways things went.

"The new boys on display such as Lance Spencer and keeper John Bagnel all worked hard and it proved a useful run out against an organised Conference side."

It was the lively Phillips who gave Weymouth a deserved lead on 27 minutes when he seized a loose ball wide on the left and went through to power home from close range.

Northfleet then pulled level a minute before the interval when Steve McKimm beat former Exeter goalkeeper Jason Matthews from six yards.
