McCarthy

After reading todays Reporter, an outsider would have thought McCarthy was the new Sol Campbell or Darren Ward(slight exageration).

Not putting the chap down, his CV speaks for itself, but he didn't exactly shine in my eyes. May well take a few games to adapt to the fleet, but my intial thoughts are that he was shaky, lacking in confidence and had tunnel vision.

Anyone else care to comment?

Definitely not so. BUT opinions are allowed. Of course it will take time and at the moment this is something we havent got, we will have to be patient and get the 1200 crowd back up to 16/1700.

Yes, the hyperbole about McCarthy's signing has been quite odd. I haven't seen this week's Distorter yet, but Paul Harrison's and Roly's pieces in last Saturday's programme claimed that Paul was possibly the biggest signing the club has ever made. Funny that, I would have thought that someone like Jimmy Logie would have been considered a bigger name for starters...

That's not to say McCarthy can't be an important player for us though.

I thought he looked good in the middle but there were two occasions in the second half when he found himself in the left back position and was done for pace both times. The first time led to their goal - the second time the ball got scrambled away in the area.

Pace isn't everthing at the back, as Ade proved last season.

What does count is timing of the tackle, knowing when to tackle and when to jocky, strength in the air, positional play, quality of distribution and commanding and leading the back 4 as a unit.

Lightening pace is obviously a big asset, but if you have that as well as all the other attributes, what the hell would you be playing in the Conference for?

Both Macca and Pop will do for me.

Add Mooro and a fit again Ports and there we have real strength in depth again.
