At last! Some real news! [No 177]

As I was queuing at the newsagents for my copy of 'Triathlon Weekly', my attention was drawn to the headline on the back page of the St Albans Observer, "Saints still in limbo".

'As far as Colin Lippiatt is concerned he has got the managers job, but with no official announcement from the club over Stuart Cash's replacement, City supporters remain somewhat in the dark' is the opening paragraph. Well, sentence actually.

According to the article, Colin has told Gibbo that he has no interest in a caretaker role.

[One of those little cameos began to form in my mind at that point, as they do:

Lippo: "I'm definitely not interested in a caretaker role Mr Chairman. I'm the man to lead the Mighty Saints out of the poo and back to glory."

Gibbo: "O.K., Colin. Hmmnn. Noted and understood. Not interested in a caretaker role, eh?. How about looking after the side for three or four weeks or so while I discuss your response with my fellow directors?"

Lippo: "Right-o Mr Chairman. Leave it with me. But don't forget. I'm not interested in a caretaker role."

Gibbo: "Champion."]

Anyway. Back to the real world. Lippo described the first 45 minutes against the Urchins as 'some excellent football', etc. The hack described the first half as City's best display of the season so he, at least, reads Woody's contribution to this message board. Well he must do, as he wasn't at the game.

I was troubled by one quote from the new err...err...err. chap, however. Describing the Margate game, Lippo said "...both sides had a major Achilles heel and that was the quality of the defending". No problem with that one but then, worryingly, the quote continued: "You have to take the positives though....", and I thought of Herts Blue.

I warmed to him, however, towards the end of the piece [that's Lippo that I warmed to, not Herts Blue]. He referred to Matt 'Matty' Nolan and the hope that Barry Fry would extend t'lad's loan period. He went on to say "The way I like to play is 4-4-2 with a target man and a second striker and he [Matty] can score as well as create".

I was re-assured that we are in safe, if temporary, hands at that point. None of this wing-back, diamond four midfield or Christmas tree rubbish.

De Souza and Wraight trained with The Woood. Scott Cousins turned down a 7 day approach from Graham Roberts' Cambridge City. Experienced 'keeper Paul Bastock from The Daggers is Lippo's first signing. Nick Roddis is player coach. Dean Hooper has withdrawn his transfer request. "I am delighted to have him at the club as he is an excellent player", said Lippo, and continued "but he would be a better one if he developed a bit of 'attitude'." No. Not really. He said the first bit but not the second. I made that last bit up just to make sure that you are still concentrating.

Ben Walshe and Chris Zoricich are injury doubts for Saturday.

Err. That's it.

Hi Webbo.

I have just received a text message to the effect that "The quest is over. The dawn of a new era. Colin Lippiatt has signed and committed his future to The Saints".

The Chairman is quoted "I knew Colin was the right man for the job the minute he walked in the door and asked for more money". No, not really. I'm in one of those moods today and made that quote up.

I expect that the slight delay during which Lippo took the caretaker's role was to permit the Chairman and the Board to thoroughly check Colin's credentials, Curriculum Vitae, and bona fides wuith Chesham, Woking, Yeovil etc., etc.

Good luck to him from me.

Fella have you bothered trying to get tickets for Oasis at MK bowl?

There's tickets left for the Sunday so seriously tempted.

Kind of agree there. I've been put off by the hoolie types who normally attend Oasis gigs in Britain.
