McCarthy signs

Just received this email from the club:

"Gravesend and Northfleet Football Club today announced they have signed defender Paul McCarthy from Hornchurch on a one and a half year deal. The player will be available for selection for Saturday’s National Conference first team fixture against Woking at Stonebridge Road. Manager Andy Ford was pleased to have got his man and said of the signing “Paul is an experienced player, he has strength and leadership qualities, he will be a great addition to the squad”.

Interestingly, it was Paul who scored the first goal for Wycombe Wanderers in their famous F.A. Cup win over Leicester. Paul joins up again at the Fleet with Roy Essandoh whose winning header in that game goes down as one of the all-time famous F.A. Cup goals.

Good signing but one concern - having rejected us in the summer, will he be 100% dedicated?

Agreed very good signing. Unfortunately its all about money isn't it?
With the rare exception of the likes of Jimmy Jackson and perhaps Steve McKimm I'm sure 90% of our squad would have signed for Hornechurch during the Summer had they been offered terms that GNFC was unable to match.

This could lead to an interesting development in midfield. Assuming that Popovic and McCarthy gell as the centre-backs then this would free Graham Porter to play in midfield giving us four across of McKimm, Suanders, Surey and Porter.

Tasty or what?

Hope the signing isn't at the expense of Moore.

A Moore Mccarthy pairing looks pretty strong, and with Gledhill and Skinner could be the answer to our defensive problems. With Mccarthy alongside him I'm sure Moore can get back to last seasons form. I've a feeling though that Andy will stick with Popovic and IMO, if he does, he'll be making a big mistake

No with respect were you there Saturday? Moore had by far the better game and must start. Popovic cost us the game

Let's be careful not to write Popovic off - I certainly won't, since I've only seen him play for us once. I'll just leave the selection up to Andy's better judgement, I think.

Also, I'm a little surprised McCarthy's signed for us, to be honest - it will presumably be quite a climbdown in wages from his Hornchurch days, and he'll have to go part-time as well. Also, I have to agree that the fact he spurned us in the summer is a little worrying. Let's just hope his apparent quality makes all the difference.
