Response to Councillor Stokes in Daily Telegraph

John Tebbit wrote a better letter than mine to the Telegraph in reply to Councillor Stoke's response to their article and so they published his today in the Sports Section! (It was more polite, but only just!)

I have access (HorshamRebel) - here it is

Slough snub

Sir - Richard Stokes, the leader of Slough Borough Council, (Letters, Nov 17) is correct in his suggestion that Slough is a thriving and fairly vibrant town, but less than honest in his assertion that Slough Town FC were seeking taxpayers' money in relation to their future. In fact, the opposite is the case.

The plan for a new ground that was put together by the previous council and the football club's chairman was that the proposed football stadium would also offer other sports facilities, thus enabling residents and those who work in the town to indulge in leisure activities there.

Bearing in mind the sports grants and building contracts that would follow, this would in turn fund the regeneration of Britwell, that part of Slough in which this important development was to be created. It was understood that this would be achieved without any cost to the taxpayers.

Unfortunately, some of the people of Britwell were terrified by the imagined problems this facility would create. Noise, traffic jams, and a fear of hooliganism were all cited by those close to Councillors Stokes and Janik, who led the opposition to the scheme. None of these factors created a problem at Wexham, the part of Slough in which the football club had played for nearly 30 years.

Following this rejection, any regeneration project in Britwell will now have to be paid for with taxpayers' money instead. How ludicrous.

Meanwhile, Slough remains one of the largest towns in Europe to have no stadium facilities to offer to its population.
