"Nationwide Conference National club Crawley Town's signing of former England semi-professional international Simon Wormull was almost dealt a massive blow when the midfielder failed his medical.

The former Tottenham, Espanyol, Rushden & Diamonds, Stevenage Borough and Hornchurch player was all set to be unveiled as the club's latest prestige signing.

And he was ready to sign along the dotted line on Tuesday afternoon, having agreed a deal with boss Francis Vines.

And the club's media and public relations officer was on stand-by, about to issue news of the confirmation of him becoming a Crawley player.

It was all dependant upon him passing a medical exam which he failed, but the Sussex side have instead offered him a short-term deal.

Town vice president Jim Green revealed: "Simon has a few niggles and has not played for six weeks."

Wormull (pictured), 27, came up against Town on July 31st this summer when he played for Nationwide South club Hornchurch.

Wormull is believed to have been earning £800 a week as a full-timer at big-spending Hornchurch, before they recently went into financial crisis and released their entire squad.

He is thought to have accepted a heavily reduced sum - estimated at around £400 - to come to Crawley.

Officials at Town are hopeful the deal will still go through on a permanent basis, but in the meantime have signed Wormull on a short-term deal whilst he proves his fitness."
