SHEARER: IT'S LOVE-LEE TO BE BACK

Monday, November 15, 2004

By JUSTIN ALLEN

LEE SHEARER wants to stay at Dover and help get the club back into the Conference.

River End hero Shearer, 27, spent two seasons away from Dover Athletic and admits Margate and Gravesend just do not match up to the warmness of playing at the Hoverspeed Stadium, which he calls his second home.

The central defender - signed by former boss Bill Williams from Leyton Orient - is hoping to extend his loan from Gravesend when the current month expires and wants to sign for Whites permanently.

And he admitted: "It's like I've never been away. I am a Dover fan anyway and even when I was playing for Margate and Gravesend I'd be up here singing and cheering with the Dover fans if I didn't have a game."

It is said that Shearer once joined in with the chant of "We hate Margate" while he was still a player for our rivals up the coast.

Shearer, who was selected for the England Semi-Pro side during his first spell at the club, said: "I got a lot of stick when I signed for Margate. It was like signing for the enemy but I was always a Dover fan. A lot of stuff was happening at the club at the time.

"Without dragging all the past up again, a lot of the lads were upset that season we went down. Gary Bellamy brought a load of players in who were earning much more than those of us who had been around for a few years. It caused splits in the dressing room and the atmosphere wasn't the best.

"But I've always got on with the Dover fans. After all, I am one of them and Dover should be in the Conference. It shouldn't be sitting second from bottom in the Ryman League - two divisions below where it was when I first played here.

"That's why I jumped at the chance to come back when it was offered to me."

Shearer was even in the Gravesend first-team a couple of days before he signed for Whites and a large section of the Fleet crowd cannot believe they have allowed him to leave.

But Shearer admitted: "I didn't know this was going to happen either. I was in their team and suddenly Andy Ford, the manager there, told me I was going out on loan. And I asked where. He told me they had received a call from Dover and immediately I was interested.

"I got talking to Steve Browne and really liked him. He reminded me that he played against me for Yeovil when we beat them 4-0. We had a bit of a laugh about it and he then told me of his plans for Dover. And I want to help.

"Everything about Dover is a Conference club and I'd love nothing more than to play for this club again in that division. I always said I'd come back to play for Dover one day and here I am."

Shearer admits that although it is the same old faces on the terraces that are cheering him, the playing personnel have completely changed.

He said: "Only Matt Carruthers and Paul Hyde are left from when I was here. But the lads we've got in the team are quality players and no way are we going to end in those bottom four positions with this team. We just need to start scoring goals because apart from that we look solid."

Like the Gate forum 2 years ago, Gravesend fans are clamouring to get Shears back.

Seems we all rate him as a player.

I thought it was odd and a shame that two years ago when he was apparently frozen out at Margate, but i have to say in hindsight that it looks like CK was right, as surely its a bit odd that both CK and Andy Ford have taken similar action, but probably its just coincidence.

I don't particularly like CK's style of management, but I do respect his decision making, he obviously saw something in Lee Shearer that he didn't like.

As has Andy Ford.

Both can't be wrong.

Good luck to Lee at Dover. I'm sure he is happier at his spiritual home, and playing for the team he supports.

It is time for Fleet to move on , as have Margit.

PS good luck with your new ground.I hope we don't have the same money and council problems with our planned venture that you havehad.

Shearer says "everything about Dover is a Conference club". Er, yeah, except for the football they play and the lowly league they play in.Think the quote should have had the word everything replaced by "nothing".A D*ver fan and a L*ton fan .Not a lot going for him really.

It'll be a shame to see Stonebridge Road go. There aren't many proper 'traditional' football grounds left. Dartford are supposed to be building a new one as well, aren't they? Was sharing a new ground with them ever discussed?

It takes all sorts I suppose, to be a football fan.
From the educated, articulate ones who enjoy sensible debate, to the peasant, uneducated underclass.
99.99% of intelligent fans saw Shearer as a top quality conference defender.

Well doesnt say much for our mangers then if they just let him go,
now as for your atempt to belittle my post as little more then the rambleing's of a underclass mindless peasant u hit the nail on the head but i would rather be a dreg of life then a pompus git who feels a need to physco analyze a post on a footy forum.
God i have sympthy for you in deed

Well said GFTW. Quite suprised 'cos usually Chatham Gary has worthwhile things to contribute but as with most of our near rivals occaisionally slips back into t*sser mode. It's a shame-feel sorry for them really.Still, we'll pass them on the way up in a couple of seasons.

We get knocked down-but we get up again-you're never gonna keep us down!

Name calling never hurt anybody - it's called rivalry.

You may be down a league at present, but I and most Fleet fans still regard Margit as rivals, and long for the day we have xmas/new year derbies again in the Conference.

On a serious note, both CK and Andy Ford have obviously seen a problem with Shearer off the field which they feel could detract from his professionalism. They both recognise his value as a player, but the question to be asked is has anything happened OFF the field which causes both mmanagers so much concern they move him on to pastures new?

Dont worry about it "gate4tehwin" the name "chathamgary" somes it up so perfectly.

I am actually amazed gary can even spell, let alone string together enough words for you to consider it a psycho-analysis.

And he even considers himself educated - But yet comes from Chatham......hmm....something fundamentally wrong with that "sweeping" statement.

I thought the only words that chatham people understood were tracksuits, giro, pregnancies, and rather large earings.....oh and fake gold!!!!

In short, Chatham gary......you are the uneducated little twat.....now return to your 15 year old pregnant girlfriend, I am sure she has a giro waiting for you to cash.

TWAT!
