I think he means this one...

"Non-League sides who lose to League clubs in the FA Cup are often referred to as being ‘plucky’, mainly by sections of the press that have never seen a game below Premiership or Football League level!

However, although on paper a 5-2 defeat to a Coca-Cola League Two side looks like a bit of a hammering, the circumstances surrounding Nationwide South club Hornchurch’s defeat at Boston United needs looking at in detail before that term can be used.

On Friday, just a day before the game, manager Garry Hill had only four senior players who made themselves available for the tie – goalkeeper Abiodum Baruwa, Danny Shipp, Jean-Michel Sigere and Adam Locke.

Whilst one accepts that the goings-on at Hornchurch have been dreadful, especially for the players and supporters, it would perhaps not have been too much of a strain for one or two more of the players brought to the club on huge wages to have helped out, especially in a big, high-profile match that could have done their prospects of future employment elsewhere no harm by being in the ‘shop window’.

In the end, Hill had to beg and borrow for players in a race against time to get something resembling a squad together in time for the registration deadline.

The one saving grace for the Urchins was the fact that the FA changed its rules regarding registration for cup matches this season. If the old seven-day rule had still been in place then Hornchurch would have had no option but to field the majority of their under-19 side that played against Thurrock in a county cup tie in midweek.

Hill managed to persuade veteran midfielder Steve Castle to play having lost his job as manager of league rivals St Albans City a week or so ago.

And the 38-year-old, who made over 500 League appearances for Leyton Orient, Plymouth Argyle, Birmingham City, Gillingham and Peterborough United before stepping into non-League football with Stevenage Borough and the Saints, actually scored at York Street direct from a free-kick!

Hill also negotiated, as part of the deal that took striker Wayne Purser to Peterborough, three loan players from Barry Fry’s side in defender Ahmed Deen, Aussie midfielder Shane Huke (pictured) and highly-rated goalkeeper Luke McShane – all 19-year-olds making their debuts in the FA Cup, although McShane was an unused sub.

Hill also brought in non-League journeyman defender Russell Penn, who numbers Enfield, Billericay Town, Grays Athletic, East Thurrock United and Chelmsford City amongst his previous clubs, ex-Leyton Orient defender Simon Downer, who had a loan spell with Aldershot Town in the Conference National towards the end of last season but unfortunately had his cup tie at Boston ended early after being dismissed in the 51st minute, while striker Andy Douglas was recalled from his loan spell with rivals and neighbours Redbridge to fill an unfamiliar midfield role.

The rest of the squad was made up with players from the under-19 team, so given these set of circumstances, the Urchins did extremely well not to have been ‘embarrassingly’ hammered and can truly be classed as having been ‘plucky’!
