Firstly, before I say this, I'm not in any way for the idea of the Gills coming to North Kent.

It's not a case of not being able to fit the stadium in Gillingham, it's a case of that ha want's such a vast piece of land for his money making scheme that he's exhausted all of the possibilities in Medway, or rejected them. There are physically no sites left for him to explore. Plus, by conspiring with Gravesham council, he has burnt his bridges with Medway council, and so even if there were a piece of land big enough in the borough, he would not be given first refusal of it.

As everyone says, gravesham can't sustain 2 football clubs, and to even attempt it is madness.

Just a little something from my coursework on the matter:

"As I draw conclusions from the fans opinions, I gather that there is an overall feeling that Gillingham are not welcome in North Kent.

Gravesend and Northfleet fans feel that the plans of Paul Scally would be unsustainable, because of their current revenue. They feel that if Gillingham cannot fill 10,000 seats, then they do not have much chance of filling a 25,000 seater stadium out of the area containing their target market.

If they cannot capture their main target market, they will need to reduce ticket prices, because of a drop in demand, and will probably end up with a decreased turnover and revenue.

By moving from Gillingham, the club is removing itself from its natural home, and losing its consumers. Although the club plan to build houses and so on at the site as well, what are the opportunity costs of moving so hastily. One could be that a larger site comes up in the Medway area, for the right price, Gillingham won’t be there to take it. Also, if they buy land in Gravesham and cannot sustain their stadium, they run the risk, although it is only minimal, of ending up in the great graveyard of football league clubs who have been put into administration, like Leeds United and Leicester City.

The risks to Gravesend and Northfleet, from a fan’s point of view, are even greater. If Gillingham leave Priestfield, and move to North Kent, it could mean that Gravesend and Northfleet lose out, losing planning permission for their own new ground. This could be a huge opportunity cost for Gravesend and Northfleet, as without this new ground, they would have little chance of gaining membership to the football league. Furthermore, they would lose out on the revenues and profits that a slightly larger ground would bring. This revenue is vital if Gravesend and Northfleet are to become a professional side."

do people agree with this?

I've not heard that. They looked at a site called Temple Waterfront, on their side of the medway, and the site they want in northfleet is where the old Kimberley Clark paper mill used to be I'm presuming.

They also looked at a site in hoo, by the golf course, and various other sites before throwing in the towel in medway!

Temple waterfront: This 70-hectare riverside site situated between junction 2 of the M2 and the thriving heart of Medway, overlooking Rochester's castle and cathedral, offers excellent potential for mixed development and possibly a new rail station.

In 2001 an initial study funded jointly by Medway Council and Gillingham Football Club concluded that Temple Waterfront was the best option for a new stadium but identified a substantial funding gap with the ancillary uses proposed at the time.

The adventurous plans put forward by the club include a stadium (with integral apartments), hotel, casino, town housing, affordable housing, primary school and nursery, pub, restaurant and a doctor’s surgery.

Initial comments from the club’s first presentation to councillors were that the scheme looked interesting. Concerns have been expressed regarding a number of technical issues including access, parking, building on contaminated ground, flood protection, damage to riverside habitat and financial viability of the site.

Good idea!

The site seems to be within that mile radius that they are planning to build in, from our ground I mean.

It also seems to be the only site that I have spotted, and with those ready made road links, I expect Scally thought that all of his christmases had come at once when he saw the site!
