Oi Webbo! Boards!

AFF

Recommended Posts

Hi Webbo.

You know those media board thingies that you put together in your shed at home. I was just wondering. Are they waterproof? Water resistant?

The reason I ask, Webbo, is that you have forgotten to update the advertising boards in Hatfield Road which suggest that our next fixture is against Grays Athletic on November 2nd and I wonder if they could be screened as a temporary measure.

What you should remember, mate, is that if out-of-date marketing like what that is puts off even 50 people from coming to our next home game, that will cost the club over £12,000 in revenue. Err...Taken over the season. Err....If it's repeated each game. Err...You know what I mean.

Get a grip, Webbo.

Why not replace the boards in the ground with plasma screens that permenantly display the website. Then the info will be updated on the boards at the same time (about a day late).

(That's a joke Webbo - no need to get upset. See you Saturday?)

Picture the Press conference at t'Park last night.

"Webbo: "Hi Stuart, Hi Colin. I'm Webbo. An international media mogul in a modest sort of way. I help Rob with his Official web-site and I deal with media stuff here at The Mighty Saints. Welcome to the club and good luck. What do you think of the media wall?"

Cashie: "Hi Webbo. Pleased to meet you. It's a really fantastic media wall. We have no doubt that we can take t'lads up the table and next season we'll be looking for a place in Europe. We'll give it our best shot.

"Oh, by the way. Please tell whoever writes my column in the matchday programme that I never, ever begin a sentence with the words 'Second half'. I can't stand that 'poor grammar equals authentic' rubbish."

Colin: " Hi Webbo. Thanks for your kind welcome. Great media wall. We certainly have a baptism of fire when we play Grays Athletic on November 2nd. We could have done with a slightly easier first game at the helm. Still. There are no easy rides in the Nationwide South."

A copy of the Review newspaper dropped through my letterbox tonight. 'Delivered to 88,000 homes in Hertfordshire' it said on the top. On the back page, a picture of Lee Clarke scoring the winner at Eastleigh, and an article about our new manager. If you read through this article carefully, you can find reference to the next home game against Weymouth on Saturday.

Now, years ago, before the Internet existed, and the only local paper was the Herts Advertiser, there used to be a little box on the Sports Page that advertised the next match at Clarence Park. People used to rely on that because most didn't bother with a programme and certainly didn't keep them after the game (only scarfers did that).

So, to get to the point, how much would it cost to put a small advertisement in the local papers each week advertising the next match? About the cost of an extra 10 adults attending the match?

P.S. I wonder how many will turn up on Saturday expecting to see Cambridge City?

Putting a box ad in the sports sections of the local rags would indeed be a step in the right direction, Rob but it still does not excuse the fact that the fixture boards always seem to be out of date lately. A lot of people go past those boards every morning and evening. Not much use if the information is all to c0ck.

Hi Rob.

Not that I know anything about marketing and P.R. but I would have thought that there is a deal to be done with both the Herts Ad. and the Observer/Review. It's not necessary to pay for this stuff with money. In return for a box ad. in an appropriate place in the paper every week during the season, we could give them a pitchside board or whatever in the ground for the year.

I assume that 'relations' with the local press are good.

Perhaps the Marketing, Media & Communications Department at the Club has already thought of it. If not, I'll waive my usual commission in the event that the idea is adopted.

Hi Woody.

Err...yes.

Sometimes in shops, one sees a somewhat tacky, plastic, multi-coloured banner about 3ft 6 ins long by 4 or 5 inches deep indicating "Under new management". Clearly the banner is displayed when the shop is 'under new management', I assume.

It would be good to hang one of those on each of the boards at Hatfield Road, having first updated the information, needless to say. Eye catching. A bit of fun. Different. [For the avoidance of all doubt, Webbo, the banner should be strategically placed on the board so that the details of the next fixture are not obscured.]

Once again, I'll waive my usual commission.

AFF, I've had two texts within the last hour telling me that the boards still say Grays!

If you're not doing much perhaps you could nip down to Homebase, pick up two long thin planks, some nails and some paint. Then paint the boards blue, and in your best handwriting, paint the word Weymouth on them.

Then, stick them in the car, drive down to Clarence Park and nail them over the existing ones.

No. It's clearly a positive strategy by the Dynamic Duo. Not even Webbo could show this level of incompetence. I can only assume that Stuart and Colin [Cashie and Lippo?] would like to have a good look at t'lads 'behind closed doors' but that would be contrary to League Regulations.

So. The next best thing? Don't advertise the game, pretend that it isn't taking place, and hope that nobody comes.

Not the strategy that I would have adopted but then, what do I know about anything?

AFF, I wonder if "Muff" are operating a similar policy for this game as they have a new manager too. I've been surprised at the lack of banter on the Conf-South forum. Perhaps they don't know about the game.

I've recently had two calls asking who we are playing Saturday because the game was not on Teletext. (I haven't checked this at all.)

See you Saturday, I'll be the man behind the goal with the dog.

Laz! Whoa!

Ask yourself this question. How do you know where we are playing this Saturday? You've got it! The web-site. It's Webbo again. "Richard Goddard signs and commits his future to The Saints". Need I say more?

I imagine that we haven't got a game. Hornchurch are on the Road to Cardiff. We tried to get Weymouth but it didn't happen.

Webbo. I take it all back. The game isn't being advertised on the Hatfield Road signboards because it isn't taking place!. You have done precisely the right thing. You might llike to put Margate up sometime before Sunday week, however.

So imagined it all. It was all a Dallas-style dream. All the evidence points to there not being a game.

FOR:

Webbo's site.

AGAINST:

Not on Teletext.

Not on the Boards.

Not in the programme.

No advert in local papers.

No adverts in local shops.

..............

I take your point.

No comment on Margate!

Sorry to interupt your boards debate, did you see Gertcha the item on sky last night, (don't ask me which sky station, as it was on in the Witham club house)

Back to the point, they were talking about Torquay Utd / Plainmoor having an artificial pitch.

Apologies to AFF. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/offtopic.gif" alt="" />

Definitely, at home Webbo. It may be Weymouth vs. Cambridge City, however, but it's at Clarence Park. It's local. I think that we should all go tomorrow on the off chance that City might play.

I saw the Herts Advertiser last night. No adverts but there is reference in the article to the visit of Weymouth to the Fortress.

An interesting photograph of Gibbo and the Duo, on two counts. Firstly, the Herts Ad photographer has also used Webbo's media wall thingy which looks really fantastic. Just like the one in the Observer and just like those on Match of the Day.

Secondly, a quiz question for you. Cashie and Lippo [?] are each wearing club ties but the Chairman is wearing a blurry, stripey one. The question is: Who is the owner of the tie that Gibbo is wearing?

My answer: Colin Lippiatt. [Elementary my dear Watson].
