EMLYN HUGHES DIES

Ex-England captain Emlyn Hughes has died aged 57 after a 15-month battle with a brain tumour.

The football legend died in the early hours of this morning, his family has said.

His health deteriorated rapidly in the last few days.

Barbara, his wife, said: "He died at his home in Sheffield with his family around him."

Hughes captained the all-conquering Liverpool team in the 1970s.

Under his leadership, the Reds won five League championships, the FA Cup, two UEFA Cups and two European Cups.

In total, he played 650 games and held 62 caps for his country.

His busy style of playing, added to his reputation for berating referees, earned him the nickname Crazy Horse.

In later years he became a television personality, best known for his regular appearance on the Question of Sport quiz show.

Famously he had Princess Anne on his QOS team once. Which leads to a hilarious [****!!****]-up answer by a contestant on a tv quiz show; "which member of the Royal Family once appeared on a Question of Sport"? Answer from dazed contestant; Ricky Tomlinson!

Seriously he was a great and really boyish personality, and tis such a shame he has died right on the back of Liverpool FC adoring musicologoist Jon Peel.
