We're Out

What I should have said is that Seaman was still being picked at the age of 38 because he's media friendly!!! He might be good but he's past his prime - you just wait and see how much longer he's first choice at Arsenal.

Let's face it - how many national sides have a keeper that old as number 1? He's past it by comparison.

The whole reason I mentioned it in that sense (even if 'a little bit off') was to emphasise that there are certain players who conform to the 'FA image standards' and other players who are overlooked because they don't.

Stuff the FA, I want the best available players playing based on their ability, not how good they are off the pitch.

BOWYER FOR ENGLAND.

As for how we beat the Argies - it took a penalty - shame it wasn't in open play.

Sweden - poor 2nd half.

Nigeria - playing for draw or really that poor?

Denmark - all three goals were gifts (Fumble, poor defending & slipped underneath keeper's body)

Germany 1 England 5 was the defining moment - I'm afraid we won't ever get back to those dizzy heights.

Certainly provoked some comment there didn't I, and for sure Seaman can't take all the blame, in fact with every other aspect he's probably still the best in the country, and very high in the world rankings but he does nevertheless have this awful aspect to his game that does unsettle players that may look to him for guidance. I'm also suprised more players have not picked up on it over the years. As for the overall problem, anyones guess is as good as anothers..... Is it possible that some players are more worried about (lucrative) club contracts or am I being completely unfair. And I'm not talking here just about England players, others have put in performances in this World Cup that would most certainly have got them dropped throughout the domestic campaign.

Looks like The Great Escape was a waste of time...

We're all talking about Seaman's error costing us the match, but lets not forget the awful error the Brazilian defender made to gift us our goal.

Take out 1 error on each side & they still beat us 1-0 - in other words, dont just blame Seaman !!

I would also argue over the fact that we did all right in the first half(at least until they scored their equaliser) - although the stats suggest otherwise (they say something like 74% passing accuracy as against Brazils only marginally better 77%), I thought we gave the ball away far too easily in that first half and rather invited the Brazilians on to us - it was almost inevitable they were going to score, despite the fact that they hadnt really created a clear cut chance previously.

After all, we didnt create anything either & I dont think either keeper really had a sacve to make other than picking the ball out of the net.

Well said Alan W - it may well have been an error by Seamo, but the whole team was indeed off form on the day, and he did save us on numerous occasions in earlier matches. Without him it is possible that we wouldn't have even negotiated the group stage.

To be honest, I feel that the players we have aren't good enough by some distance to lift the World Cup, but they could be when the younger ones have reached their peak in four years time. To be honest, I would've taken anything past the group stage at the start of the tournament, and while with a number of favourites falling early on (e.g. France, Portugal, Argentina) the tournament had opened up a little for us, I am more than satisfied with our overall position.

Steve W's right when he says we should be grateful where we are after the terrible start to qualifying, and generally Sven's done a fine job. Admittedly, his best tactics in the tournament were effectively dictated by the injury to Hargreaves against Argentina, which 'allowed' him to play a proper left-winger in Sinclair for once. But to his credit, Sven has handled the press much better than his predecessors (e.g. Keegan, Hoddle ), and it has rubbed off on the players.
