We're Out

No quality, no ideas. Out with a whimper.

You let a team keep the ball & you are going to get beaten. Obviously our pampered overpaid superstars have never heard of 'closing the opposition down'.

Beckham was so ineffective - his idea of winning was to try to win a penalty whenever possible.

Scholes, a supposedly attacking midfielder, spent more time in his own half.

Seaman - the name says it all - w*****.

Nice to see Sven admit we were poor.

Brazil, time wasting cheats, are not worthy enough to win the world cup - Rivaldo, the supposedly greatest player in the world, kept falling down and rolling around 'in agony' - he should have been made an example of after the Turkey match.

Brazils first goal came from Becks jump out of a tackle, although in all fairness 6 499 999 999 thought it was going out and 1 Brazilian thought he could retrieve it, and the 2nd, well I've often been accused of being over critical on this point but the amount of outside the box, over 30 yard efforts, that David Seamen has let in over his career in important games has left a lot to be desired. I for one think that Ronaldinho was going for it.

Any 'keeper can make a mistake. Seaman did, and unfortunately it was in a World Cup quarter-final. It was the players in front of him who were as much to blame, though. Where was the urgency against 10 men?

England passed it across midfield like they were 2-1 up, and completey forgot to get any crosses in.

I hear, however, that Rivaldo's been signed up to do the new Oil of Olay ads - his face is so precious they see it as a marketing opportunity.

Despite the fact it looks like it's been hit by an iron.

Shocking 2nd half. Does SOl Campbell think that lumping the ball from the back straight out for a Brazil goal kick would get us a goal??

Clearly Scholes was unfit - he was slow into the tackle and lost the ball for the first goal. Also, forget who gave it away but the free kick for the 2nd goal was a stupid free kick to give away in the first place. OK Seamn should have saved it comfortably, but he has saved us earlier in the competition.

Beckham, Scholes and Owen were all woefully short of the pace of the game - it passed all of them by in the 2nd half. Maybe it would have been different had they all been 100%, but the fact remains that we had no idea how to break down 10 men - we even made their shaky defence look competent!!

COME ON SENEGAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stu, I'd go along with that if it was just once, but as I've repeated before, there are numerous occasions where he's been beaten in this department, certainly a lot more than other 'keepers who I've watched over the years. And nothing unsettles a team and in particular a defence when an experienced goalie makes what amounts to a basic error

The pony-haired girlie should have made way for Nigel Martyn after France '98.

David Seaman reported on BBC as being 'devastated' and 'holds himself responsible for England's exit'.

Yet not a single member blame him and Beckham reported to have said that if Seaman is made a scapegoat 'it would be a disgrace'!

Nothing to do with the fact they all played very badly then?

Best chance in years of winning it and we blow it.

I wish the 17th August wasn't so far away.

I didn't say it wasn't an error (an awful one at that), but none of the outfield players seemed to realise they were 2-1 down. It was sluggish and lacked any sort of tempo.

Even the States went at Germany and were almost rewarded for it.

Seaman's to blame for the Brazil goal, but the others are to blame for not looking remotely interested in getting an equaliser.

Come on then Daz......you have all the comments...how do we win Euro 2004 then ?

( without you naming yourself as manager or centre forward...or both !! ) ??

Cheers,

I hope the low life tabloid media ritual of crucifying all and sundry ( apart from themselves of course !) does not come into play now !!

Problem with blaming Seaman is that if he makes a mistake or misjudgement it results in a goal. The countless times our midfield + defence gave away poossession was scandalous.

For Euro 2004, get rid of all the older statesmen now (Seaman, Southgate, Keown, Sheringham), and bring in some other younger players from the U21's for the qualifying group.

By picking players who deserved to be picked on their footballing talents, not just because they fit the image the FA require.

By this I mean that Seaman is still picked as number 1 because the likes of Nigel Martyn & David James are not media friendly - the FA want players in the team who are willing to give an interview at the end of a match - not simply bugger off into the players tunnel!

Then you have the case of Lee Bowyer - regardless of the issues off the pitch - the bloke should've have been in the squad, especially when you consider how short of quality midfielders we really were. Yes, we were without Gerrard due to bad luck on the injury front (and how fit was Beckham really?), but Bowyer would have fitted the bill perfectly. There was also Ray Parlour, on form for his club who should have been picked.

Then there's Emile 'Is it my turn to fall over yet' Heskey - yes I know he was one of the better players today, but even John Barnes had the odd good game for England, but the poor performances always outnumbered the good.

Overall we DO have the players to blow the opposition away, but you have to look at the squad and realise it wasn't the right one.

'MY CHOICE' ENGLAND SQUAD (Playing 3-5-2):

Goalkeeper: Martyn

Defence: Cole, Ferdinand, Campbell

Midfield: Dyer, Gerrard, Bowyer, Hargreaves, Beckham

Forwards: Fowler, Owen

Subs: Richard Wright, Michael Gray, Ledley King, Wes Brown, Richard Rufus, Ray Parlour, Joe Cole, Trevor Sinclair, Kevin Campbell, Teddy Sheringham, Alan Smith, Francis Jeffers.

Not saying that I'm 100% right but there were better choices than those made.

Super Daz -

I would question playing Ashley Cole in a back three, I actually think that he is probably at his best in the wing back role.

I am a bit bemused by some of your other choices, namely: no scholes? The subs: Kevin Campbell??? Ray Parlour? (granted he would do a job but would be a backward step)

I also think it's time to say thanks Teddy but we must look to the future.

Only my opinion, it would be interesting to see what others think.

Scholes has become very lazy in a lot of recent games both club & country - if the Scholes of couple of years ago would return then I would return him back to my squad.

At least Kevin Campbell knows where the net is - his overall record at club level shows that - wherever he has gone he has scored goals! Slightly off the boil last season (mainly to a row with his club) but this is just the type a player for the bench - fresh from the season and ready to prove a few doubters wrong!

Basically we need players who might have some different ideas up their sleeves, as to be honest, England ran out of them about 5 minutes into the 2nd half.

Of course, it easy to say 'bye bye' to certain players but WHO would YOU pick?

Wow! what a load of down beat opinions guys! I suppose it's to be expected. Okay so we're all p*ssed off (to put it mildly) But..................

Firstly, I'd say simply, we just weren't good enough on the day.

BUT Secondly, our players do not become poor over night (including Seaman). So Who? What? Do we blame.

I realise this is probably an unpopular statement at this time. But here goes. I 'blame' the management/coaches. I'm convinced our players are a as good as any in the competition. At this level you have to show more to your 'tactical locker' than the same game plan for every match.

It was a total disgrace that mid-field (probably our strongest asset) was bye-passed time and time again.

Maybe Sven has still some learning to do but I'll tell you what, I DON'T THINK HE WILL LEARN. All of a sudden he and his team seem average and unless he can change his approach we could be remain ever the bridesmaids.

Daz, I agree with (most) of what you are saying, but to say that Seaman has only been picked because of his image is a little bit off. I think we would all agree that Sven has generally picked the strongest side that he has had available at the time.

If we had won today I bet you wouldn't be calling for Seamans head as he has been one of our better players in the tournament. I personally believe that Martyn comes a close second to Seaman in the ability stakes and James doesn't come close to either. (ITS JUST MY OPINION OK!!!!)

The players looked knackered in the second half, as they have in every game, if there is a problem its in our lack of ability to change things around during a game.

I'm disapointed but quite happy at the thought that the majority of this team will be around in four years time and if Gerrard had been fit, there is no doubt in my mind that we would stil be in the tounament now.

It is so annoying that we can go out and beat the argies, but against the brazlians we couldnt even pass the ball.Even when they went down to 10 men they didnt look like they were going to lose.We really should should of put pressure on them once Owen had scored, But we gave them even more room to play.

We didnt show enough urgency after the second goal, our passes werent telling enough.

Time for the old guard to go and the bring in fr

e

sh blood from the under 21s for 2004.

We are all disappointed after Englands poor performance today but I have really enjoyed our time in the tournament and eventhough the players didn't perform, I applaud them for getting England this far.

I remember our poorer showing against Germany at Wembley, beaten 1.0, Keegan resigns and all the FA hope for is a manager to rebuild the team for Euro 2004. At that time no one expected England to qualify for the World Cup let alone reach the last 8.

So come on Daz, reflect on the good times and remember that some of the players you are criticising today, you will be praising in several months time when England start their Euro 2004 qualification campaign.

Anyway the real reason why Seaman watched that ball sail in over his head was that he promised to cut of his pony tail if England had won and the realisation of that happening was too much for him.
