MARGATE 2, Weston-super-Mare 0 – 30/10/04

Margate recorded their first win in four games, beating their visitors by two goals to nil at Homelands this afternoon.

The early stages of the game did not look promising for the home side, as Weston made their physical presence felt and put pressure on the Margate defence. On six minutes Peter Trego was forced to concede a corner by saving a David Gilroy header from the edge of the six-yard box.

Five minutes later, Rocky Baptiste headed on to Stadhart whose snap shot from just inside the area was saved by Ryan Northmore. Stadhart was involved at the other end when he cleared following the second of two further corners in quick succession for the visitors.

On 23 minutes, Aaron Barnett and John Keister were on hand to clear another Weston corner. Then three minutes later a lovely cross-field ball found Lewis Hogg in a forward possession. He moved inside and hit a low effort from inside the “D” that Trego collected slightly to his left.

Barnett then suffered an injury that required him to leave the field for 5 minutes of treatment. The central defender went up for a 50-50 ball with a Weston defender but fell to the floor after appearing to be hit in the face. The referee must not have seen the incident or he surely would have taken decisive action. Margate struggled to retain their defensive shape all the time that Barnett was off the field. The game re-started with a drop ball that was sportingly hit back to Northmore. His long clearance was headed on by Adrian Mings with John Keister averting the immediate danger by clearing for another corner to the visitors. Margate struggled to get the ball out of the danger area for some time but order was restored to the back line with return of Barnett.

On 33 minutes, Margate did go close to opening the scoring when Baptiste took the ball into the opposition area. He exchanged passes with Benevides and with a delicate back heel set up Junju but he hit his effort just wide of the right hand post.

Both sides had a chance to score as the half time break approached. Firstly Benevides over-hit a right-to-left cross that Charalambous did well to pick up in a wide position. He popped the ball back inside for Baptiste who hit a dangerous looking cross invitingly for Benevides but his timing was not quite right and the ball skimmed off the top of his head and wide of the goal. Then Weston broke with Jonathan French who hit a right foot effort from 20 yards, but failed to unduly trouble Trego.

Chris Kinnear started the second half with Darren Watson on for Junju, and almost immediately the Stadhart/Watson partnership looked more balanced. A long ball forward found Watson on the right. He attempted to find Stadhart but his cross was weak and intercepted by Jarman.

While Margate - particularly through Watson - were getting into much better forward positions, the Seagulls still looked dangerous on the break. French picked up a cross-field pass and forced Charalambous to concede a corner. French took the corner himself but the resulting headed effort went over the Margate bar.

At the other end, Clarke’s looping ball forward found Stadhart on right edge of the

Weston area. His accurate pass found Benevides who hit a left foot effort just over the bar from just outside the area.

Weston enjoyed a series of corners mid-way through the second half, and even though there were some tense times in the Margate area, the visitors would eventually pay for their profligacy. On 75 minutes Matt Rose went close when the ball broke to him and he powered a near post effort from a narrow angle only to see the ball cannon of a combination of defender and keeper and out for a corner.

On 82 minutes, the home side went ahead. Watson made a powerful run into the area; saw Stadhart pulling away into space. He laid the ball nicely into Stadhart’s path and the Margate striker thumped the ball home for his sixth goal of the campaign.

Two minutes later, Weston were almost back on level terms when Adrian Mings was found by an accurate pass. Mings moved into the area and hit a left foot effort just over Trego’s bar.

A minute later and Gate effectively secured all three points when Benevides did well down the right, exchanged passes inside the area with Watson. It looked as if the Blues would be unable to create a clear chance but Watson managed to keep in contact with the ball and was able to eventually slip the ball into the back of the net from close range.

After the game Canadian central defender Ross Smith explained how tough the current situation at the club was. But he paid tribute to the optimism and leadership of manager Chris Kinnear. On his own form, he commented: “I am happy with the way my form is coming on but I know I still have more to offer Margate. We knew we were up against it in the first half at times but going in 0-0 against a team higher up the table than us, we still felt we could go out and get a result in the second half.”

Margate: Trego, Smith, Annon, Barnett, Benevides, Charalambous, Keister, Jjunju (Watson - 46), Baptiste (Bulley – 75), Stadhart.

Subs not used: Hussein, Pulman.

Thank you for that excellent report.

Lets hope things will improve now - hopefully Billy is about to return and Gradley will mean that the bench is a little more balanced - not all forwards.

Excellent report above.Sums up the game well. Just a couple of things.Benevides had a good attacking game. Always wanting to venture forward and when others return he should be even more effective in midfield. Can really turn people and attacks players. Charamboulous not so clever, giving ball away on several occasions and put the defence under pressure. Sorry you Rocky fans but he just isn't doing it. Watson's introduction showed he has the little extra class up front.Great lay off for Che and good skill for his own goal.

All round a very even match and the two goals came when the match was heading for a sure 0-0. Watson made the difference.

Apart from Charamboulous ( yes I know he's out of position but what IS his position?. Not up to it really but he has had to come into the side and has done o.k.in the main,,,,considering), and Rocky, others all had a good game. Smith was in sparkling form and Trego was 1st class today.

True Alex did give the ball away a bit but he's got a great attitude. For me the star is Peter Benevides. His chasing of lost causes made the second goal.

pete is great player and its a shame we may never see the best of him as he looks like a briliant winger something that we dont really use but that aside he can play well just about any where so it seems.
