The hunger for a Fleet win has gone. horns looked starved and got their deserved win. The money will be needed! There wasn't much evidence of it going through the turn styles. How is a team of pros kept with that gate money? Now there's an interesting question...

Could it be related to drug money? Perhaps Mutu will be your next singing then.

Don't kid ourselves,it was a poor game,to many balls in the air, very little football, though Hornchurch were a little better, and deserved to win.No commitment or desire to give 100%,dispite the ridiculous team huddle at the beginning and half time, let's stop it,it does nothing to help team performance.Essandoh was poor,Moore lacks pace to recover, and the wall to cover for the free kick was pathetic.I was in line with the free kick and at most there were only four in the wall, leaving a huge gap to Wilkerson's left, where subsequently the ball finished up,Hornchurch put 8 or 9 in their wall. The defence leaks goals at an alarming rate, especially at set pieces. Some one who would have put some backbone into the defence is now on loan to Dover!!

I think we're all kidding ourselves regarding Shearer - we have tried various combinations at centre back - Moore, Porter, Shearer, Saunders, Rom - all have combined in some shape or form through the season - yet we stil only have the 1 clean sheet against York in 16 games - perhaps we should be looking outside the club for another (experienced)central defender.

We dont seem to have the one commanding defender to take control - as we did in the Rman season with Francis.

Had the pitch been Upton Park or Basildon Rec the Fleet would still have been the losing side. It was close but there wasn't much evidence of 'hunger and bite' from them. That long run of good form (and luck) has taken its toll. The ingredients that gave the impression of just turning up to collect the three points has been consumed. The dreams are gone. It happens. That fine run of results was a legacy carried over from last year. It was a magnificent achievement but it's history. It's now a case of looking forward; reinstating the basics; hard work, a recognised and collective commitment. It almost amounts to a restart to the seasons campaign.

I agree, Alan. We couldn't even keep a clean sheet when we were whipping the pants off Leigh a few weeks back, what hope do we have against teams with good attacks? We cannot simply soldier on with our current centre backs, especially if Saunders has to go in the team as back up. Moore has been simply shocking this season and has appeared to have picked up some kind of long-ball disease over the Summer. At the moment, our only assured defender seems to be Justin, who might be out for some time, judging by his injury yesterday.

It was nevertheless good to see the return of Gledhill to right-back, he gives us a little more defensive bite than Protheroe, whom I think sould be put on the right instead of Drury.

The same old tactics of shoving Moussa on when things aren't going well failed again today, he either needs to start or not be brought on at all, in my opinion. Another big problem at the moment is the lack of attacking options coming off the bench; if Pinnock gets brought on for the last fifteen minutes of the game, he has so much to prove in so little time that he just goes for rash shots, similar to Jukebox...

There is certainly a lot to think about for next Saturday, after that dreadful performance yesterday, was it only one shot on target apart from the goals? So much to improve in so little time, a continuation of this kind of form will see us in the bottom half in no time.

wilko

skinner

porter

saunders (had a great game at the back v aldershot until sent off)

gledhill

protheroe

mckimm

surey

drury

pinnock

essendoh

In my eyes, this has to be tried, Protheroe is a much better player in midfield, composed, sees the pass v good.

Pinns needs a start, drop manny, he is not performing at the moment.

Gledhill is more of a defender than proths, they might link up well if protheroe coached him a bit during the game and stopped the "standard line ball hooooofff" from gledhillA few nice one twos could almost be like watching the old gary neville becks line up a few years ago at old trafford!

And therein lies the problem in my view, Alan - too many combinations at centre-back leads to a lack of continuity and therefore makes it difficult to form effective defensive partnerships. Although this obviously isn't Andy's fault a lot of the time, owing to the grave injury problems we've had in that position so far this season.

However, Andy's comments in this week's Distorter about Shearer just underlined what a shame it is that our squad appears to have been hindered by off-the-field problems. He declares that anyone available who is better at centre-back than what we already have will be brought in if possible, 'as is always the case'. Clearly, and ironically, Shearer would seem to be that man. He seems to have more passing ability than Moore this season, as has already been acknowledged. I will admit, though, that it is a tough one for Andy - we all know how good Moore was last season, and so I'm sure it's playing on Andy's mind that he knows how good Moore can be and so he continues to play him. I can fully understand that. Who'd be a manager, eh?

Squawk's team above looks a fairly good one - although I do feel that bringing Saunders back to centre-back all the time does disrupt the midfield. I am also a little surprised that Pinnock hasn't got a real chance in the last few games, given our sub-standard attacking performances, particularly in the second half of games (anyone at Halifax last week will certainly attest to this).

As I said in an earlier post, our strikers yesterday were completely isolated a lot of the time and weren't linking themselves. Perhaps Moussa starting would link the attack and midfield more. He's the type of thing we could of done with in the team yesterday, someone to carry the ball out of the defensive area and up to the strikers.

My current team would be:

Wilko

Protheroe Porter Saunders Skinner

Sidibe Mckimm Surey Drury

Essendoah Manny

Although, I'd play Saunders in midfield and put Shears at the back if he weren't on loan.

Pardon my ignorance..what was said then?

Look lower down the paragraph that you quoted from my post for the gist of it. He also added that he hasn't decided whether Shears is coming back at some point or not.

My view is that whilst the midfield is looking solid, our front two can sometimes become very isolated and therefore I think we need someone playing in a free role behind the front two who is capable of both attacking and defending.

Therefore my team would be:-

Wilkerson

Protheoe Porter Shearer Skinner

McKimm Saunders Surey

Pinnock

Ominyimi Essandoh
