Ebbsfleet Station

I know this not a footballing matter. But for those interested.

On completion Ebbsfleet is to be known as Dartford International Station.

The Gravesend Messenger is running a campaign to overturn this name change. If you are interested, and wish to comment, email:- labbott@thekmgroup.co.uk

If we are not careful we will be swallowed up by Scally or Dartford.

I think you'll find that it straddles both boroughs. Whilst the bigger part is probably in the Borough of Dartford, the boundary takes a very odd route down there.

Several important points are made by The Messenger, amongst which are:

1. It's the Borough of Gravesham (& the long suffering car drivers who have to use the Peperhill stretch twice a day) which has suffered the brunt of the disruption & upheaval.

2. Irrespective of which Borough the site is in, it's just over 2 miles from Gravesend town & something like 5 from Dartford.

To which I'd like to add, how would the people of Dartford feel if the decision had been made to call it Gravesham International? Not pleased, I'd guess, & with just cause. Ebbsfleet International is perfect. It accurately names it after its location & keeps alive the name of an area, rich in archaeological remains, as was borne out by the discoveries made during the work.

This is a decision made by suits, looking at a map, with absolutely zero knowledge of the area on the ground. They claim to have consulted with focus groups (oh, please!) & local residents (by which they probably mean the people living in the smart new development on the Ingress Abbey site.)

Chris Pond is threatening to throw his dummy out of his pram over it, which might carry some weight, as he's a virtual clone of Tony Blair. Perhaps we can persuade him to get as hot under the collar over Scally's plans to suck away the Fleet's chances of taking advantage of what is going on on its doorstep.

Possible future thread on the Gillingham forum from away team fan contemplating coming to watch Gillingham play whoever.....

Q - I'm coming by train to watch the game on Saturday, where's the nearest station?

A- Dartford International

Q- Where's that?

A- Near Gravesend

Q- So I'm coming to watch Gillingham whose ground is near Gravesend and but I get off at Dartford International station?

A- That's right, but make sure you get off at Dartford International station and not Dartford station

Q- So there's two staions at Dartford?

A- Not quite, one is in Dartford and one is nearer Gravesend

Q- So why didn't they call it Gravesend station?

A- Because there already a Gravesend station

Q- Is that in Gravesend?

A- Yes

Q- Too confusing, I think I'll stay at home

A- Don't do that, we already have trouble getting our new 25000 seater stadium more than a third full.....

Seeing as the station is in Swanscombe ( not Dartford, Gravesend or Northfleet ) Surely if its taking a local name it should be that.

But if anyone does need to protest, I would target the local ' independant' Swanscombe councillors on dartford council. I believe that they currently hold the balance of power and as such, despite being small in number can exert influence over Dartford council. I would imagine that they would be equally upset of an area in Swanscombe being called Dartford International Station, and would much prefer the name of Ebbsfleet, which as suggested prior, is the correct historical name for the site.

Up the Fleet....
