Match Report: Sutton United 2, MARGATE 0

Missing Oates, Edwards and Gradley was never going to make the trip to Surrey easy, but Margate made hard work of it against a side in the bottom three and previously without a win at their Gander Green Lane home. A disappointing first half was followed by a much-improved first 20 minutes of the second half. But once again, Gate failed to convert possession, pressure and chances into goals and paid the price conceding two goals in the final 20 minutes.

The home side set the pattern of the first half early on. Their preference for moving the ball forward quickly and at every opportunity led to a succession of crosses and corners. On three minutes the first Sutton effort flew just wide of Trego’s left hand post. Then two minutes later, a swift right wing move and cross saw Charalambous conceding the corner.

On 10 minutes a free kick taken by Adrian Clarke from just to the right of the Sutton area was not capitalised on by the Margate forwards.

Peter Trego was called into action on 17 minutes when a long cross into the Margate area was headed on by Fear but collected in acrobatic fashion by the Blue’s keeper. Whilst Margate had defended quite well during the first half an hour, the corner count would have sent warning signals to the Margate bench – the home side winning six corners. When Margate did push forward through midfield, their neat play failed to break down the home defence.

As the first half reached the latter stages, the U’s went close to taking the lead when a ball from the right has hit goal-wards but unfortunately for the home side just wide of Trego’s right hand post. Margate did have a chance to take the lead themselves when another Adrian Clarke free kick was met by Aaron Barnett’s header, but he was unable to direct it beyond the reach of Phil Wilson in the Sutton goal. Straight from the clearance, Sutton forced Trego into a desperate save low down by his left hand post.

Margate’s puple patch came in the first 20 minutes of the second half. On 47 minutes a long ball forward from John Keister was chased down by Moses Junju but his effort was a yard wide of the post. Just a minute later, Adrian Clarke was released down the left. His cross into the middle of the Sutton area was aimed at Junju but he did not get enough contact on the ball with his head and was only able to deflect it wide for a goal kick. On 13 minutes another long clearance from Trego found Junju in the middle. He picked the ball up, advanced to the edge of the area and hit an effort that was saved comfortably by the keeper.

Shortly after, Che Stadhart received the ball in midfield and went on a powerful surging run from the centre circle into the Sutton area. Only some last ditch defending prevented the Margate striker going all the way. It was during this period of play that the referee stopped play as bizarrely some of the Sutton players seemed to be arguing amongst themselves!

Then on 70 minutes, the home side got the goal their first half play deserved but that looked unlikely in the second half given Margate’s controlled play. The ball was swung into the Margate area from the left, only partially cleared, pushed back into the area where Tony Quinton pounced to head the home side into the lead.

The goal seemed to galvanise the home side and knock Margate out of their stride. But on 74 minutes, a Margate free kick found Stadhart who turned and volleyed just over the Sutton bar. And on 85 minutes, Baptiste went close following a Darren Watson knock-on.

But the game was effectively ended on 86 minutes when following good work down the left by the impressive Nigel Brake, Eddie Akuamoah hit a left foot effort into the opposite corner of the Margate goal.

Even with the injury problems, Margate will have come into this fixture with high hopes, but Sutton deserved their victory.

Margate: Trego, Smith, Annon, Barnett, Benevides, Charalambous (Ngongou), Keister, Jjunju (Watson), Baptiste, Stadhart (Bulley).

Subs not used: Hussein, Pulman.
