Should we believe the FA?

It seems to me that this may well be a complete fairy story from the FA.

Firstly, there was a tangible reward for winning the vote (money for a local school, and expenses for a trip to the FA Cup Final for the player), therefore the FA could not afford to have the result seriously challenged by advocates of any of the players involved.

Secondly, there were no statements on their website about what was, or was not, a legitimate vote.

Therefore, if they had altered the result such that Scott Partridge was no longer the winner, they could have left themselves open to the result being legitimately challenged. However, by picking some numbers out of the air, and claiming that they represent some "investigation", they were able to pacify those advocates of the other five players that were claiming, since one player had such a large percentage of the vote (and the only evidence available was the list of percentages on the FAs website at the time), that something "unfair" must have been taking place.

In the vote for the player of the previous round, the FA website says that 11,673 votes were cast (with 67% - approximately 7821 - going to the winner), and yet for this round they claim 23,954 (with 41% - approximately 9821 - going to the winner), more than double (and an extra 2,000 for the winner). Is it feasible that an AFC Wimbledon player would poll 2,000 votes less than a Bath City player, given the relative sizes of the current fan bases.

According to the Bath Chronicle, Scott Partridge was told, by "a lady from the FA" that "Someone somewhere had worked out how to constantly vote and get around the system they have which allows just one vote to come from the same computer every six hours." And yet, we are supposed to believe that nearly ten thousand votes were registered for Scott Partridge without going beyond that limit.

It seems to me that this is one big smokescreen to cover up for a thoroughly bodged attempt at publicity for the FA website. It seems that the main objective was to be able to say that there has been a large number of people visiting the website, and voting in this poll, and so the FA must be very popular, and then when they found themselves with one player gaining 90% of the vote, it made it look rather hollow.

A very plausible scenario and not very far from the truth I would venture. However, we will never know the whole story. It is very sad that Wayne did not receive the prize which was undoubtedly his by right but life sometimes isn’t fair. We all need to put this one behind us now as we have far bigger fish to fry – not least this coming Saturday. Urchins, we shall have the last laugh. Where will Bath City be next season? Languishing in the depths of the Southern League. Where will The ‘Urchins be next season? Playing in the Nationwide Conference and pushing for promotion to the Football League! BTW Hasn’t the name “Twerton” got something to do with Bath City?

Twerton Park is where Bath play their home games.
