That's one of the great myths Daz. The name of Gravesham can be found in the Domesday book long before either the Black Death or the Great Plague of 1666.

 

I can't lay my hand on any references at the moment but if you really need to know I can dig it out.

Dave the Great Plague was 1665 and the Great Fire of London was 1666 still what's a year, as for the name of the Town do not know the true story but i do know it has nothing to do with the plague, but what a name i would have changed it a long time ago.

I have been looking furiously through all my books that came with me from England but can't find the one i want.In one of those books it states that the name(is thought to) come from Grafes-end or Grafes-ham.A grafe(or grove) was a large wood, and the original settlement(a Ham or Hamlet)was at the end.The name gradually got corrupted to Gravesend.

Swanscombe? Was it given its name by a bunch of chav ducks who thought the local swans were scum and 'Swan scum' gradually got corrupted to Swanscombe?

Found the book..........Tracing the History of Place Names....Charles Whynne-Hammond!

The name seems to have become Gravesend( the end of a grove) in 1157.

I disagree on this one (based on what was taught to me at Sweyne Junior School in Swanscombe):

The settlement was later variously called Suinescamp (in the Domesday Book), Sweinscamp and Swanscamp, the name deriving from the Viking king Sweyn Forkbeard, who landed in East Anglia, and became King of England in 1013.

Whatever the case. Its a good job those good men of Swanscombe were around, as they earnt this great great county of ours of 'Invicta' motto.
