Today's Listening

Recommended Posts

Started taking my ruck sack into work again, so got more than the usual 4-5 CDs on me today...

Depeche Mode - Violator

My views on this one are on another thread!

dramcd0002.JPG

Katie Melua - Call Off The Search

Except my CD-Rom drive doesn't seem to want to know with this one.

4950832.JPG

Simon & Garfunkel - Bookends

Bit of an ever-present at the moment. America is a top tune.

CDPRG1007.JPG

Duran Duran - Big Thing

From 1988. A top album - I'll lend it to you, Gertcha!

5386092.JPG

Norah Jones - Come Away With Me

Nowhere near as good as her second album, but Don't Know Why is a cool tune, and she looks well nice on the front cover

Very Best Of The Lovin' Spoonful

Almost 30 tracks on it, so a bit too comprehensive for a starter, but it wasn't a bad listen

RKIDCD007.JPG

Oasis - Morning Glory

Haven't listened to this for ages, but still one of the best five albums of all-time, and still better than Def. Maybe

CDPCS7372.JPG

Radiohead - The Bends

Haven't listened to this for ages either. Good album, but not one of the best five albums of all-time!

Joni Mitchell - Ladies Of The Canyon

Not as good as her other earlier albums, though The Circle Game is a top tune

BBL037CD.JPG

Charlatans - Between 10th And 11th

Well underrated album from 1992.

Girls Aloud - Sound Of The Underground

...and the new album is out next month, but disappointed to hear that the new single is a cover of the Pretenders' frankly dire dirge from 1994, I'll Stand By You

Kid A? That's a bit off type cast, their experimental, less melodic album..

Mind you, I think when you're looking at tracks like Idioteque (great live), Morning Bell and The National Anthem, it's still a quality album.

I'd put my prefs as:

OK Computer

The Bends

Hail to The Thief

Kid A

Amnesiac

Pablo Honey

Well, it's quite simple, OK Computer was easily the best album of the nineties from my point of view. I'd put it in my the top 3 of the best albums of all time, but that doesn't mean you should believe anything written in Q!

But I rate this because, as I've mentioned before, my tastes are a bit on the prog side of things. But I haven't heard anything bar a few Beatle and Floyd albums that are at this level.

By the way, for anyone without any of the previous albums, you have to get the Super Furries best of album, you can't be disappointed with that.

Yeah, I'll probably get that Super Furries best of, although I have both Radiator and Phantom Power.

Zeal's Top 5 Albums Of The 90s

1. Oasis - Morning Glory

2. Blur - Parklife

3. Blue - Blur

4. Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill

5. The La's - The La's

Fairly predictable, huh?

Actually, it'd probably be pretty different were you to ask me again another day!

I might have a proper think about it and post my Top 10 later!!

Already I'm thinking Modern Life Is Rubbish should be in there, but I surely can't have 3 Blur albums in my Top 10?

Actually, good thinking.

I reckon Peasants Pigs & Astronauts would come in my Top 10 actually. A brilliant album, and a band cruelly written off my the music press thanks to Crispian Mills' "swastika" comments.

Best band I saw at Glasto in '97.

Black Clouds, Broken Wings, Lizards & Destruction likes them too.

Yeah, I was there that day too. Didn't know much about them before that - only Grateful When You're Dead, I think.

They were first on too, I think. When I saw them at Glasto, they headlined the second stage so they put on a great light-show and a tremendous set.

They were really chuffed to get anyone watching them at all I think, as Radiohead were on the Main Stage at the same time, and Primal Scream were on in the Dance Tent!

Yeah, not sure how Dreadzone fitted into the line-up.

Still, I'm glad I got Sunday tickets rather than Saturday. Not being much of a dance fan, I was glad to get Cast and the Charlatans rather than the Prodigy and Chemical Brothers.

Wouldn't have minded switching Dreadzone for either Ocean Colour Scene or the Bootleg Beatles, though!!

No gigs planned myself, except the T4 Smash Hits Poll Winners Party that Thornsy and I are going to in November. Should be good for a laugh, though I've a horrible feeling the bars may not be open. Hopefully there will be some cheerleaders there for us to "virtually intimidate".

Failing that, I might hang around the stage door afterwards for Kim and Nads, and have a quiet word with Ms Stevens about my mate Gertcha!!

Thats nothing to look forward to Yellow!

I've got Bloc Party and Art Brut in Amsterdam to look forward to

The NME were raving about some new Girls Aloud song this week, I guess it's on the new album ..... shame about the new single though!

Knebworth was probably one of the best gigs I went to in the 90's

Not sure boyband Blue would make my Top 5 albums though Zeal.
