FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round.

WILLENHALL TOWN 0 vs SHEPSHED DYNAMO 0

Still smarting from several missing players through holiday (Whitcombe), suspension (Thomas) and injury (Colcombe, Edwards, & Curran) assistant manager Chambers found himself named as one of the subs for the Reds as they entertained fellow Unibond side Shepshed.

At one o’clock the game looked off as a sudden downpour flooded the Noose Lane pitch, only some sterling work by the club ensured the game could be played.

The first real effort came on 12 minutes when a low free kick by Quilt was scrambled off the Dynamo’s goal line.

With £3,750 prize money at stake it was always going to be a tight game, and the crowd of 190 had to wait till the second half to see the game come alive.

A quiet word during half time by Reds boss Smith saw the Reds come out and take the game by the scruff of its neck.

On 58 minutes Hay battled through the visitors defence before setting up an unmarked Quilt, his powerful shot brought out a terrific save by keeper Baldwin.

Sub Jackson replaced Smith and on 66 minutes his cross was shot just wide by Hay.

Following a corner five minutes later, Jackson saw his swirling shot go just over the crossbar.

The visitor’s best effort came on 74 minutes, when Moran saw his close range effort brilliantly blocked by Vaughan.

Despite the best efforts of the assistant ref, who seemed oblivious to the rules of off side, and the ref who judged both sides tackles / fouls differently, the Reds continued to press forward. On 76 minutes another low free kick by Quilt brought another super diving save from the Shepshed keeper.

In the dying minutes, Creighton saw his headed effort cleared off the line and Quilt had another effort blocked by Keeling.

With neither side able to break the deadlock they must do battle again on Wednesday at Shepshed.

After that the Reds travel to Colwyn Bay on Sunday 10th October for a league game, before leaders Ilkeston visit Noose Lane on Wednesday 13th October.

Reds line up; Vaughan, Colwell, Webb, Slater, Creighton, Field, Myers, Swann, Quilt, Hay, Smith. Subs; Tyrell, Jones, McGhee, Jackson, & Chambers.
