Waltham Abbey 2 Barkingside 2

Recommended Posts

In the words of Max Boyce "I was there " when the Frankies dropped their first points of the season! YES!

Its a game of two halves and this one certainly was and Barkingside have only themselves, the weather and the officiating for the result.

After 25 minutes a blaytant elbow in the face on the edge of the box gave first blood to Abbey by smashing the nose of the nose of a striker from Barkingside. The ref in fairness gave a free-kick, (but no booking) which was dispatched (0 - 1). After about another 5 minutes the Abbey keeper was at full stretch to deny a possible second. Just before half-time Danny Snowsill made a lovely cross for Barkingside to nail (0 - 2). Game all over?

Then came the team briefings at half-time. Barkingside came out and sat back, Abbey got an opportunist type goal 10 minutes or so into the second half. 1 - 2. A second was soon coming and you felt 2- 2 was not going to be the final score with Abbey perhaps escaping.

Barkingside in the final 5 - 10 minutes got a free kick outside the area, put the ball in the net and it was disallowed because they did not play to the refs whistle.

So Abbey dropped 2 points but it should have been 3 points.

You didn't need to be able to lipread what the Barkingside bench thought of the officiating, you could hear and many of those watch expressed a similar opinion.

Why when you have a showcase 1st and 2nd in the table playing each other game do you have a novice set of officials with a refs assessor (Mr Egglington) marking them. Surely it would have been better to have Mr E in the middle for this important match. Just an observation. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wall.gif" alt="" />

Well done to both sides today - they put on a very entertaining game. I thought Barkingside probably just shaded it - some of their first half football going forward was excellent - but credit to the Abbey also for their spirited comeback.

'Nice' to see it's not just us that get refs like that - far too weak, a couple of the Abbey boys in particular can consider themselves to be very lucky to have stayed on the pitch. It was probably the physical side of the game that put Barkingside off their stride.

Overall though I thought the game was a credit to the ESL. Barkingside played the same sort of attractive football they played against the Town earlier this season and Abbey look the strong, organised, side we know they are.

Best of all, they both dropped points!!!!

Compo. I was standing next to you at the game and I can 'honestly' say that the Barkingside player headed the Abbey player's elbow! Surely that is what the ref interpreted it as? But he then gave a free kick to Barkingside who scored from a very good free kick.

Great goal - shame about the incident. Hope the Barkingside player recovers soon.

Interesting interpretation of the 'new' offside law yesterday!

first of all thank you all for coming over. secondly never come over again! it was the worst game i have had in ages!

in fairness a draw was probably fair although we should of been two up after 2 mins! and missed a few as did barkingside.

as for the "blatent elbow" that is a bit harsh. yes he did catch him and yes it was a foul but he did not mean it or swing his arm. when you jump your arms go up to get leverage that is all.

spoke to a Barkinside player after the game and they had 3 new players for the game one from dag and red, that is a big compliment to us as well.

our manager was happy that we come back from 2 down but we had about 8 players under achieve on the day a still took a point from a good side so there is something in that.

are we a physical side??? i dont think that we are in any way. we hold our own but physical im not so sure.

anyway its nice to get a few differant opinions.

yes we dropped our first points but we did it in entertaining fashion and to a good team.

good luck today town i will be over watching and hoping you keep the flag flying high.

I was at the game also. Very entertaining.Barkingside had the better of the early exchanges. But after they went two up Abbey dominated the rest of the game, until the last 10 minutes when Barkingside came back into the game and scored two disallowed goals. The refs refusal to allow a quick free kick and a very poor off-side discision kept the scores level.

Overall, a draw was a fair result. As for theBarkingside No10 having his nose broken,to me it looked like a blatent fist in the face. Two players went for a high ball, the Barkingside player tried to head it,whilst the abbey player lead with his fist and was very lucky not to be sent off. Abbey's No6 also got away with headbutting Barkingsides No8 in front of the main stand. Also pinnicle was was lucky that his over the top lunge directed towards their No4 missed his leg. Also Abbey's No5 got away with raising his hands (after a admitedly late tacke by a Barkingside player.)Saying that, i don't feel Abbey are any more 'dirty' than most other ESL teams.

the player said after he didnt mean it and im pretty sure he didnt. however it came about it was unfortunate and i wish the barkingside lad a quick recovery.

also to clear up the "quick freekick" the ref said do they want it quickly? they said no they want 10 yards, so then you have to wait for the whistle, you cant just take it when you want after that! obviously from the side you dont know that but that it what happened! what a freekick tho! also the offside goal, everyone stopped about 10 mins before he put it in!

yes i see the "headbutt" (which was more of a head to head) but all the same i have seen people sent off for it, credit to the 8 who didnt act like a baby or anything and just walked away. the 5 (wes forde) did react to a bad tackle, again not much! and lovely stuff i wasnt actually near the player (pretty much summed up my day!). but in a big game things like that happen and you are right we are no "dirtier" than any other side in fact we are/was joint top of fair play league! and our league is not a dirty league.

Didn't Jamie Richards get the other one? If so, three familiar names on the scoresheet.
