...just thought I'd share this 1912/13 story with you....

 

On 26.10.12 Margate were involved in a bizarre Thanet League match at Dumpton against Ramsgate Town. During the pre-match warm-up Mancey of Margate hit a shot that broke the goal post and the kick off was delayed whilst emergency repairs were made. Margate were 2-1 down when a shot from Robson flew into the net, bringing the whole goal down around the Ramsgate goalkeeper. The Ramsgate players tried to claim the ball hadn't crossed the line but the referee rightly allowed the goal to stand, making the score 2-2. Meanwhile further repairs were made to the goal and the match eventually resumed in semi-darkness with a piece of rope taking the place of the crossbar that had snapped when the structure collapsed. In the gathering gloom two 'qualified' judges were placed near the goal to adjudicate on whether shots were too high as it was difficult for the referee to see. The game was poised at 3-3 when a Ramsgate player hit a rising shot that clipped the rope. The referee ruled the effort out but the judges persuaded him to change his mind and Ramsgate were 4-3 up. Then with only seven minutes left the match was abandoned due to the bad light.
