The Chairman's Programme Notes

This is an interesting response I received from a friend of mine who used to be a STH down the park, when I sent him John Gibson's programme notes from last night. Some fair points raised I think.

"Gibson is talking about people who have been going to games for a very long

time. They have been paying to see games for a very long time and putting

money behind his bar.

During this period City have been in a promotion position, had good FA Cup

runs, been 10 minutes away from a Wembley final, scored 100 goals in a

season etc etc. They are now second from bottom in the league. What does he

expect in terms of coverage? Anyone can write that City played superbly in

the Observer but that doesn't alter the fact that they relegation-haunted

already. Why would a new fan want to pay £8 to see the league's worst team?

People turned up to watch Mitchell's team however. His argument contradicts

itself somewhat. He's prepared to ban long-standing supporters but says

unless people turn up to watch the ghastly overpriced fare on offer the club

will "die".

They were "almost evicted from the ground", so they weren't evicted in any

way then, in common with everyone else. He seems to think he is the club."

For this very reason, myself, Laz and the rest of our group chose not to drink in the clubhouse last night. The money that SACFC must make out of bar receipts in a season from Laz and myself alone must amount to a small fortune.

Instead, we drank in the Mermaid, where they have some decent cider.

On top of all this, Gibson would of course be unaware that EFM have twice sponsored matches at Clarence Park, unaware that one of its members used to update the ClubCall line at great expense to himself, despite the lack of news forthcoming from the club, and a further two of its members have regularly sponsored players at a cost of £100 per season. In fact, in 1998/99 I sponsored two players.
