Most of what I've heard has been in conversation 'about' a black/asian person, JK, rather than directly shouting 'at' the target.

I guess that, unless you were in the near vicinity, it's unlikely you would hear this.

But just because phrases like "fking c00n", or "p@ki" or "n*gger" are said in "polite conversation", I wouldn't have thought it would make it any more acceptable than singling out black/asian individuals and saying it to their face, something I'm pretty sure this employee of the club would never have the front to do.

fair enough,
it just seems odd that i've not come across it...

According to a quote from the Chairman in the St Albans Observer last season EFM are racists. We have to assume, as he hasn't discussed this with any of the members, that he has heard racist remarks or witness racist behaviour. Clearly, JK, you are not paying attention at games.

Not sure if I should get involved, but I received a PM requesting I look at this thread and comment.

Racist remarks CAN be considered an offence under the Race Relations Act. It all depends on the circumstances, BUT at a football match, if these remarks were made within hearing distance of a police officer, a prosecution could follow.

We've all had banter on different threads, and no matter what I may write, sarcastically or not, I ABHOR RACISM !

If your club refuses to take action against 'supporters' making racist remarks, gestures, etc, then you should inform your club that YOU are going to make an official complaint to the police of racism. You do not have to be of the ethnic class that is being abused to make a complaint.

OK - I know Dorking is a much smaller club, and yes, we do have ethnic players, YET, I have NEVER heard any racist comments levelled against them, THANK GOD. There is plenty of banter in the club bar after a game, but racism doesn't figure !

With all due respect, you've misunderstood entirely, JK.

 • At Sutton, a steward reported the use of racist language from two of our fans. I don't know who they are, but it was reported to this club.
 • A group of teenagers shouting racist obscenities at the Purfleet goalkeeper in a league match at Clarence Park on 1 October 2002. Reported to club chairman and nothing done.
 • An employee of SACFC in his mid/late-40s, regularly using "old skool" language in the bar.
 • Two characters on the terraces, one in his mid-20s, another in his early 30s (?), have been heard using racist language by a friend and regular contributor to this board, whose word I implictly trust.
 • The steward to whom Alban refers, who may or possibly may not be the same person that has been reported to the club by A.N.Other. Again no action taken.

The oldest person on the list is late-40s at most. Not sure how you can write it off as "old skool" language, JK.

I was in the Media & Communications Centre desperately trying to write a match report of a game that I found uninspiring immediately after the match.

A saintsfan who I didn't recognise complained to the Chief Steward that the Dorchester 'keeper had thrown his water bottle into the crowd following the final whistle and that such behaviour was totally unacceptable. The Chief steward directed the fan to the chap who used to drive the red tractor in the boardroom. [Err. That is the chap was in the boardroom. He used to drive the red tractor on the pitch.]

Anyway. Sitting in the main stand was a chap from Dorchester who joined the debate and said words to the effect "What do you expect in view of the amount of abuse t'lad was getting?" The reply was something along the lines off "However much abuse he was getting, that's no excuse for throwing his water bottle into the crowd". The Saintsfan continued to the boardroom and someone else can contribute to the 'what happened next?' in there.

It turned out that the Dorchester fan was related to the Dorchester 'keeper and when t'lad appeared, his father [?] quizzed him on the incident. The lad said that the home fans were throwing coins at him throughout the game and he re-acted by throwing the water bottle. [i was tempted to enquire "How much did he get?" but passed as I was still struggling with the d@mn report.]

As an aside, and a propos nothing, none of those 'on the periphery' of the flare incident at Eastbourne were at t'Park on Saturday.
