Croydon Athletic 0-1 Slough

Slough progressed to the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Cup this afternoon with a 1-0 win at Croydon Athletic. Steve Daly scored the only goal of the game with a header in the first-half.

 

Croydon Athletic came close on several occassions during the second-half to grabbing an equaliser and had at least three shots cleared off the line during the last 10 minutes but the Rebels held on for the win.

Deinitely a cling on job for the final ten minutes, but oddly enough, that seemed to rally the supporters behind the goal and down one side into really getting behind the team en masse.

 

Chant of the day? "You've only got one ball." Top notch.

 

Farland. Still a legend. Hope his testimonial at some stage this year goes really well. If only it was more local I think we'd have to go along.

Unable to go today, what was the teams overal performance compared to the last few league games? Eddie make any significant changes?

The line up was:

 

Whincup

Saulsbury at right back

Daly and Mike Murphy at centre back

Moller as left back

Carbon right wing

Steer left wing

Metcalfe, Harris & Gyoury as central midfielders

Spencer as the lone striker.

 

Sort of worked. Carbon and Steer tucked in when we didn't have the ball so it was a 4-5-1 and pushed on when we did have it to make a 4-3-3

 

Really did cling on for the late part of the second half and they had the majority of the ball as we were happy to sit back and soak up the pressure. The lack of a target man upfront showed, although Spencer did well enough in the position. Better than in recent games as well, as a win will always boost spirits.

Well although I arrived 40 minutes late due to the Clog up on the A23, I though the team's overall performance wasn't bad. We were better in the first-half (or from what I saw of it) than we were in the second, and as i said before, Croydon Ath. were unlucky not to score when they had several shots cleared off the line.

 

By the way, my MOTM was Saulsbury. Anyone agree?

My MOTM was Whincup he was solid all day and the save at the end was brilliant.

I'd say Saulsbury just for the goal line clearances. Yes, I did get the goal for those unfortunate enough not to make the early part of the first half! 100% record continues on that front at least!

Whincup's save at the end was awesome. He seems to make at least one incredible save like that per game. But I'd go with Saulsbury for all those last-gasp clearances as well. How Croydon Athletic didn't score today amazes me.

Can somebody describe that awesome save for me, please?

Whincup went from near post to dive across the goal to claw out a header from a far post cross. It was a good save, but a poor header IMO

Damn my working hours, its moments like that I wish I could see. I bet it felt like time had slowed down when he did it as well.

Considering it was in or around the 90th minute when he did it, you could say that.

Daly was far and away MOTM in my opinion. He didn't miss one header at the back all game. Gary, I presume you mean Frankland not Farland, if so then yes he was once again a good laugh. Much better Slough performance and a really exciting match which made the difficult journey much easier to take.
