to reply to ted's answers to my last two postings-

firstly you did not read the text about cheltenham and wycombe correctly-i say that these clubs had good players that needed good wages IN THE LOWER LEAGUES(not when they got out of them).

and looking back at history- i listed those stikers to prove a point that cliff hercules though not a bad player would not figure in most peoples idea of a top five slough striker.its not my fault that i have seen many more slough strikers than the person who posted the article.

Quote " In wages to keep players at Cheltenham..." indicates the players had been there a while--so cannot refer to time in the lower league. <img border="0" title="" alt="[smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

sorry ted you don't seem to understand-they paid good wages to good players to get them to play in the lower league.surely when steve thompson went from us to wycombe he was on a higher wage-surely also when rushden and diamonds were in the doc.martins league their players earned more than most of the other clubs in that league-thats why they had the better players.sorry- if you don't understand now i can't help you.

ps.but i expect rather than conceed the point you'll come back with something silly.

Try posting what you mean then. I can only reply to what you have posted, not to what you think you've posted.

No further postings from me on this thread--I think its gone on long enough.

and how did they get from dr.martins div.1 to

conference? sadly you have ignored the main point of "chucking money around" its not so much in transfer fees-but in wages to keep the players at cheltenham-like wycombe a lot of the players that got them out of the lower leagues, were already good enough to carry the club to the next stage.

just to answer "here's hoping"

john ritchie-jimmy brown-peter lowen-peter feely-dave kemp-john connell-roger connell-kieron sommers----just a few slough strikers who rate higher than dear old cliff in a slough shirt.don't take my word for it-all but two have represented their country and two of them have played for chelsea and arsenal.

i haven't listed centre halves because it would be embarrassing to do so.

i must agree that football at this level is not what it used to be-but then neither is grammar schools.
