Two bit manager Colin? Do you actually know much about the game at this level? You only have to look at what Cliff achieved in his first full season on a decent budget (Lower than ours). <p>Young local players were brought in with a blend of experienced quality to form a very useful side in the space of 1.5 seasons.<p>How long has Browne been in charge now? How many promotions have we got in that time? How many local players do we have?<p>None of the answers to those questions are good, so maybe a change is necessary.

i don't know your age gary but i was at wembley in the 70's and even further back to the skemerdale amature cup classics-where in 1967 their whole team barring the goalkeeper eventually became pro's-and in 1969 when steve heighway the great liverpool player was on the left wing.and the great sides of enfield and hendon would, given the same levels of fitness, win the conference most years.so yes i believe i know what a good non league footballer looks like-and also a good manager.cliff h.while a reasonable player(though he would not make it in any team of slough's best players)has not managed at a higher level than div.1-and i have said before you need a big name if possible-if only to create interest off the pitch.

and before any "wags" get on here and denegrate the past-surely you learn from history-the good and bad(though i have to admit-some people never learn)

I was there too with all that Skelmersdale, Dolphin Stadium & Amateur Cup Final euphoria, but you can't compare then and now, football's changed a lot. For a start they aren't "shamateur" any more.<p>We don't need high profile, we aren't high profile and we won't be in non-league terms until we're back in the Conference, from where we should never have been "relegated".<p>Horses for courses to get us out of this league for starters, so why not Cliff H?<p> <img src="graemlins/images/icons/rolleyes.gif" border="0" alt="[rolleyes]" /> smile.gif" border="0 <img src="graemlins/affig.gif" border="0" alt="affig" /> <img src="graemlins/images/icons/cool.gif" border="0" alt="cool" />

Oi Colin - Cliff Hercules a 'reasonable player'! Are you mad? mad.gif" border="0 He's a true legend - a superb player at the very least! <p>As for not having managed at a higher level than Div 1 - what league are you lot in next season? <p>Get Cliff and Backy in and you'll go up. Trust me.

Colin I do not know how old you are but I am guessing very old. You seem to be living in the past. A big name manager? We do not have the status to attract such a manager and they do not guarantee success. Some (although doubtless not you) would consider Graham Roberts a big name following his glittering career at Spurs, Glasgow Rangers and Chelsea. Whilst he was marginally better than Browne we must remember it was HE who brought Browne to the club. Cliff was an essential part of the team when he was at this club contributing to our BEST ever league season. Highest number of points, highest position, semi final trophy run and battling FA Cup defeat in extra time to Cardiff. Cliff has now got a team promoted from this level with a lower budget and a clearly respected assistant. If you want big names p#ss off and watch a team with more money than sense.

well the last couple of letters confirmed my utterings that people never learn-wycombe managed to get martin oneil-cheltenham also thought big-at a time when both of them were not getting crowds any better than slough had at the time.once you get to a much higher level the crowds will come back.and as for the comment about watching clubs chuck money around-unfortunately there is no other way of doing it.and no i don't consider graham roberts a top manager(didn't even consider him a top footballer)finally its not a question of living in the past-the question was posed to me had i any idea of football at this level-and i was just proving that i had,and i repeat dear old cliff would not get in a list of top 5 slough strikers or centre halfs-but of course if your young you wouldn't know that-you probably think van nistleroy was nearly as good as jimmy greaves or dennis law(don't make me laugh)

Colin,<p>You may be as old as the proverbial hills, but you obviously never went to school.<p>Ignoring your total disregard for using capitals correctly...<p>Skelmersdale (note correct spelling) were semi-pro back in the late '60s (note correct placement of apostrophe). Most clubs were still amateur (note correct spelling) and would have struggled against Skelmersdale.<p>The Conference did not exist until 1979 when the Alliance Premier League was formed so I have no idea what you are blithering on about with regard to Enfield and Hendon.<p>Cliff Hercules would comfortably fit into most Slough teams of recent years and has an excellent (albeit short) record as a manager.<p>The fact that he hasn't managed above Ryman Division One is irrelevant as that is the league in which we are stuck.<p>You may think we need a big name, but that is simply not going to happen - The George Borgs, Gary Calders, Alan Devonshires and Geoff Chapples of this World would not be interested in taking over an also-ran Ryman Division 1 side.<p> <blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">quote:</font><hr><strong>(though i have to admit-some people never learn)</strong><hr></blockquote><p>Quite right - with the current off-the-field set-up, we are going nowhere. Most of us came to this conclusion quite some time ago. You, however, never learn.

dear iain,

while i accept people having a point of view different to mine-you must if you want to have an argument get your facts right.skem.were classed as amateurs in 1967 and 1969 and for that matter in the early seventies otherwise they would not have been allowed into the AMATEUR CUP(doh)it was only later they turned semi-pro.and didn't enfield when they were invited into the alliance/conference win it at the first time of asking?also wern't most of the old england non league sides drawn from the ishmian league?

no don't let my lack of being a good typist stop you from getting your facts right.

finally i am a teacher-if you ever got anywhere near a grammar school our paths may have crossed.

The key to our promotion last year was team spirit, terry Back is a great motivator and always seemed to bring out the best in the players.

All of our players seemed to get on very well with cliff and Terry.<p>I believe that if you bring cliff and terry in you will go up.<p>And also cliff a reasonable player? <p>If you call 301 aylesbury goals reasonable!

Colin<p>I used to watch the teams of the 60's and 70's especially the Skelmersdale farce ( with Slough leading 2-0 the police allowed the Skem fans around the pitch - thereby intimidating the Slough players )<p>Although the players were never as fit as now , there was certainly at least an equivalent skill factor - Les Hartridge , Terry Reardon , Bob Stevens - all local lads to name a few. In an area the size of Slough there must local talent. <p>Does nayone know the local scouting set-up : does it exist.

Can't imagine there is one otherwise you would have picked up some of the excellent players in Beaconsfield SYCOB's championship winning team last season. How the hell did Brownie miss signing Rob Paris who lives 10 mins from your ground, left your reserves early last season to sign for SYCOB, moved to Northwood this year and played more them 20 times for them before moving to Aylesbury and playing 26 times in their promotion campaign! He would have given you 10 times as much effort (and probably ability) as some of your so called "star" players for a fraction of the outlay. My you, I doubt any body from Slough has even checked on his progress since he left you!

Yes---Our manager is very good at promising promotion, getting relegated, spending money, recruiting poor players who only play a few games for us, letting players go who then perform well for higher placed clubs, and letting league prospects slip through his figers. He does all this while blaming everyone else. It explains why most fans have no time for him, but unfortunately we seem to be stuck with him.

Here's a quote from history--from memory, so the odd word will be wrong

" What will become of our society? Just look at the youth of today--rude, uncouth, drinking and fighting in the streets, interested in chasing girls rather than working. things weren't like that in our day......"

Petronious Arbriter 200BC

It really depends on whether you want to learn from history, or look at the past affectionately
