England!

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering, when was the last time Spurs had three people in the starting line-up for England? Must be a while ago.

Hey, I've just realised! If a club has three players playing for their national team, you can claim that the club won the match rather the actual England team, a la West Ham winning the World Cup in 1966.

So I guess Spurs beat Poland last night 2-1.

Excellent stuff.

Reckon it's a long time back, actually.

I mean, there's Sheringham/Anderton/Campbell, but Teddy had signed for Man Utd before R-Sol became and England regular in 97/98.

And there's Gazza and Lineker in the early 90s, but don't remember a third player breaking through, and Waddle and Hoddle in mid 80's. Maybe Waddle, Hoddle and Clive Allen at some stage??

Might find a Spurs Scarfer Forum and ask them.

Just checked, Brew! The match was played seven days after we lost 2-3 in the Cup Final to Coventry!

Can't find a line-up mind, though I suspect your three players are correct. Don't know that Mabbutt or Clive Allen were getting much of a run in the England side back then.

In fact. Mabbutt didn't get many caps at all, did he??

Clive Allen hardly played at all despite banging in 47 goals that season. The prolific Mark Hateley obviously offered a greater goal threat. Mabbutt played more at the end of his career for England but again was underused. Steve Perryman, only 1 cap? I could go on.....!!

Gertcha - was that in the Times, then? I've double-checked my Les dates, and he definitely joined in 1997 from the Geordies!!

It is mate, written by George Caulkin who also makes the point that there was only one United and one Arsenal player in the starting line up that day.

Looking forward to see the backbone of the England side on Sunday.
