BBC ESSEX

BBC Essex used to provide coverage of all of our away games in the Conference, and by extension, would have done the same for you now that you are in the Conference.

However, they have taken the decision to cover West Ham, a team not in the county, on the basis that there are lots of Hammers in the county and they can no longer get commentary on every game through the London stations

Please take the time to email BBC Essex to complain about their decision not to support local sport.

The man to email is:

Tim Gillett

Programmes Editor

BBC Essex

01245 6 (16042)

07736 481030

tim.gillett@bbc.co.uk

Here is what he said to me:

"We are offering commentary on West Ham matches purely by demand. So many listeners are West Ham fans and can't get commentary elsewhere that we are providing a service. BBC London 94.9 offer West Ham commentary on some matches as do Talksport. We are able to offer commentary on every West Ham match....

West Ham fans living in Essex have no such service until now.

I'm very proud that we have added a further service to our sports output, and one I'm sure which will greatly boost the number of listeners who enjoy sport on BBC Essex."

Let's tell the BBC that we want our local station to cover our local teams!

Have to agree with you both, it should be Southend Utd, Col U, Dag&Red, Canvey, then if they have space Hornchurch, Grays, Thurrock, Redbridge, Braintree, Ricay, Heybridge, Maldon & Chelmsford. Westham should come after Witham Tn and all of Step 5 from Essex.

It is bad enough, Essex people support them, what will happen like the tv attracts Liverpool, Arsenal, Manutd, BBC Essex will attract local fans to support Wham. It is hard enough for even Southend, Colchester to get gates let alone non league, with you CanvEFM and Dag&Red 100% boys.

thats fine dave but the radio reaches many more people on an average saturday afternoon.. in your car, at work (i believe there are people who do work 'off line' still !!), or even sat in the garden looking after your kids at this time of year.. plus its also nice to hear how all the essex clubs are doing over the 90 mins.. west ham my a.se.. they might as well do arsenal as there are prob more of their fans in essex than west ham now

We had the same problem with Radio Kent at one time when they declared that they wouldn't cover Welling because they weren't in Kent and then the began covering Charlton.

Charlton still get some coverage, but the main coverage is now Gillingham/Gravesend. We get home & away match reports on the radio, (I think but I'm always at the matches so I can't swear to it) and as mentioned above full commentary on the away matches via the webcast

Like you David, it does not effect me either as at the (Braintee)games too, but some fans can not make all the games and then some of those fans don't have internet access like we do, so they are up hit creek without a paddle.

Westham on BBC Essex i think it is a terrible idea, not because I hate westham, but they ain't 'king Essex.

I've never been a big fan of BBC Essex's coverage. It seems to be they only start taking notice of you when you get into the Conference.

You look at some of the huge matches we've had in the Ryman League against Gravsend and Aldershot over the years and I don't recall BBC Essex doing live coverage where as BBC Kent and Southern Counties covered these matches respectively.

I suppose you can't fault their non league coverage as they have reporters at most of the big games but there seems to be a real lack of live commentaries from below the Conference National.

BBC Essex put out the live radio commentary of our game at Carlisle.

I think we`ve had pretty good coverage from BBC Essex over the last few years, quite often they would give live updates and interviews after the game. I do wonder how big an audience live commentary of a typical Conference match gets let along a game below the Conference.

I wonder if our deal with Classic Gold Breeze has effected our coverage on the BBC.

I cant pick up BBC Essex particularly well in south-west Essex...but I still think it's an ar5e. Want local, lower league football.

The Gravesend site was a godsend last week, as I got to hear the Canv/GNFC match...and as a half time bonus I could hear the commentator drinking his tea and the PA annouce the location of a lost black glasses case with a Gillingham FC crest on it!

Best live sports commentary I'd heard for ages. Love it!
