3-5-2 v 4-4-2

which do you prefer...?

2 solids banks of 4 defending for 80 mins n looking for a break ?

no heart attacks when its 1 v 3 at the back

or

attacking football with more chances

an attempt to dominate midfield

a reliance on the pace of the wardster

i prefer 3 5 2 as it is more exciting, this season is all about staying up and getting used to this level, but lets at least atttempt it playing football rather than survival tactics...

we have wardy n sterling back for next sat .. i reckon we just need those wide midfielders to remember they do have some defensive duties, especially when we are at home

With the way we've started our games this season being on the back foot for the first 20+ minutes, starting with 4 at the back might be a good idea, to absorb the pressure. Once the game settles down in the last 25+ of the first half, we can start to play our style of football and take the game to them, flooding the Midfield when we attacking and still reverting to have four at the back when defending. If we play players that can adapt to either formation we could change throughout the game depending on the circumstances. Can't wait to see Sterling in action though and Wardy back, but then who do you drop?

4-4-2 isn't all defending though.

i have to agree with CANV EFM, i think we should stick to 3-5-2 as we have played this way for so many years and everybody knows there duties. my back three would be mcgee, sterling and cowan. the last to games we have defended terribly at times so with a change or two to the back i think we could stop leaking goals.

I like a 3-5-2, but its a problem if Keeling plays.

It works OK when you have wide midfielders like Midgeley/Duffers/Joseph but we saw on saturday that when you play an out and out winger it really exposes the defender on that side of the pitch. I felt a bit sorry for McGhee, he's not a left sided player and had to cover more of the pitch than a player in his position should do.

So having said that I wouldn't mind seeing us try out a line up similar to:

GK-Potter

RB-Joseph

CB-Cowan

CB-McGhee

LB-Sterling

RM-Kennedy

CM-Sedgemore

CM-Minton

LM-Keeling

CF-Boylan

CF-????? A new signing in the mould of the Tamworth Sub Rory May

Saturday, (assuming everyone apart from those injured or suspended on Saturday are fit) I'd go with:

GK - Potter

RB - Joseph, CB - Theobald, CB - Cowan, LB - Sterling

RM - Kennedy, CM - Sedgmore, CM - Dobinson, LM - Bourne(?)

CF - Boylan, CF - Berquez - (Am I being a too optimistc here?)

Hard the pick three main defenders when none of them are natural Left-Backs! Also where abouts in Midfield does Tony Quinton play? I haven't seen him play yet and he hasn't be included in any of the First Team Squads since Carlisle.

Minton looks likely to be injured still and Keeling will be suspended for Saturday.

Buzz has got the ability but at 35 he's not going to play every game this season. I agree he had a good game Saturday but our back-line is aging. I think everyone apart from Cowan is 28+ and I feel we need to use both the brains of the experienced and pace/ability of the young to pull off a good forumla that works together - Remember the Ward/Britnell/Porter partnership of 5/6 years ago? I thought it worked wonders for us then and I don't see why we can't have something similar with Ward/Sterling/Cowan.
