Also Portway is well known on the non league scene. Played I believe for Chelmsford for a while. Proven goalscorer. Someone correct me here if I'm wrong, but I think he has also lost the sight in one eye? Can anyone clarify this?

Steve Portway is a legend, and once played for Romford and Purfleet and was certainly involved in a £17,000 move to Gloucester City ( was it from Dartford ? ) at some point which is a lot in the non-lge game. Thought he had given the game up at end of 02-03 after a spell at Bromley, but maybe mistaken. Eye-sight problem was at Rushden & Diamonds. Nothing but a big plus for the ESL and well done Burnham Ramblers for this little coup.

I understood that he picked up an eye infection from some grass getting caught in his eye as he landed during a game. Was about ten years ago, I think.

Although he has spent the majority of his career in Kent (mainly at Dartford and Gravesend & Northfleet), he can often be seen around Essex. I know that he still supports fundraising events held by junior side Gidea Park Rangers.

Saw the name on the Centre Spot last weekend and wondered if it was Steve. Will be a quality striker at ESL level and should score a hatful at this level, a la Jeff Wood at Leyton a couple of years ago.
