Town Vs. Burnham

The challenge by Kevin Riley that got him his second yellow was two yards from me and the captain of another team who I was standing with and neither of us could see where the foul was,the Burnham player never appealed just got up and went to continue in the game exactly the same as Riley.

I cant work out if this was his worst decision or having a free kick re-taken after the first effort had been cleared for a corner which he awarded and then changed his mind.

Its started already, we won 3-0 today and have to say the ref contributed quite a bit, when it goes your way no one moans but our friends from Hullbridge I would say were justifiably aggrieved at some of the decisions. Not a good performance by us maybe 1-0 mmm not sure, we did not live up to pre season form is all I can say right now.

Have to agree nut! If the two pens had been against us we would have been a tad upset! I thought it was a 'nothing' game... the worst I have seen this season but what the hell ? Don't play well and get three points... I'm not complaining!!!

You are biais supporters. Other than that Enfield were the best team and will win the league?

was thinking about this comment, and, well ALL fans are biased, that is why they are fans and not match adjudicators

HOWEVER - ask your goal keeper and your other players what they thought of the ref. He was out of his depths.

When your player was sent of the foul took place 3/4 yards in front of the box; the ref MARCHES with the ball held out at arms length and puts it at the side of the box 6 yards furhte forward!!

Do the ESL train these refs, or are they left to continue to make the rules up as they go along and ruin the entertainment?

ST is right, yesterday's ref was out of his depths - although, to be fair, he was only due to be a linesman as the ref pulled out.

Some of his decisions were just surreal, from another universe - the one ST mentions above, what was he doing? I wasn't far from that incident and neither supporters, players nor linesman had a clue what he was doing or why he was doing it. There was the strange incident of the goalkick to ETFC that turned into a free kick to Burnham on the half way line after treatment to one of their players over the other side of the pitch. The incident where the Burnham No 3 raised his hands twice against an ETFC player right in front of the lino, didn't get booked, then scythed down Kevin Riley with his very next challenge, nowhere near the ball and no red card followed. If he'd acted appropriately there the fracas a while later would have been avoided.

I don't think the decisions just went against us either - just very poor all round.

Totally agree AT. Riley was hacked down by Burnhams No 3 as he strode past him. It was a prossional foul, dangerous and cynical.(don't forget this was 30 seconds after the No3 should have been sent of for violent conduct....What did the ref do.He called the player over gave him a stern talking too,and let him off.

Contrast that to Riley being sent off 5 minutes later.Riley tried to win the ball of a Burnham player, the player stumbled and the ref blew for a foul.Whether it was foul was debatable. To send Riley off for the tackle was a complete joke ( i rate that decision up there with the Carstairs sending off by D'urso in the EFC v Woking Trophy Semi 10 years ago - IT WAS THAT BAD ).

Also, the fact that the Ref wouldn't seem to allow corners or crosses into the box, constantly blowing for a foul the moment a corner or cross was stuck. His finest moment came in the second half when the Burnham No5 punched the ball away as a Town player went for a header, the ball then rebounded back in the box ,where Negus was flattened. What did the ref give.? A foul to Burnham.

As for the match....Two Good early goals from Nyman/R.Hall. The midfield of combination of R.Hall/Wright/Everitt(Geraghty) looked solid also.

The ESL refs have had a summer break and I was hoping that perhaps they'd gone away somewhere nice (together?) and would have come back refreshed and with a new-found ability to make sensible decisions. Unfortunately this was not the case. Ok, so the ref was in fact a referee's assistant in ref's clothing, but he was whistle-happy and poor with it. As someone in the crowd suggested, I really don't think he'd be wise to put this performance on his CV.

The football:

Thought ETFC played some very nice stuff. Nyman looks a very good acquisition - intelligent player. There's little doubt that ETFC are a stronger team this year - they played as a unit. Rudi Hall and John Everitt did well in midfield and Carey Wright seems to be growing into his role. Great to have Matt Negus back. I thought Smith had a very quiet game up front, but it was nice not to have to be overly reliant on him.

My God, only 90 minutes gone of the season and you lot are moaning already.

Divine right to win things and every official to cow-tow to anything in a white shirt? I don't think so. Come on Townies get a life.

If you consider the fact there are 10 times more Town fans than other EESL fans (based on attendances), it follows that you will probably get about an equal ratio of our supporters wanting to post here. Thats why it seems we're always complaining, because THERE ARE MORE OF US VISIT THE BOARDS. And anyway, if you don't complain about anything then nothing gets done. I'm sure some ESL officials take note of who are the better refs in this league and weed out the dross that comes through at the start of each season.

And the bad news is... things will only get worse at our level.

When many referees turn their backs on the game over the next 18 months because they can't/won't take the child protection qualifications that they are going to need, the FA will still promote the best of what's left to cover Conference, Isthmian & Southern League fixtures and the likes of the ESL & SSML will have to make do with what gets left behind.

I don't know who the referee was at ETFC on Saturday but my big fear is that the sort of performance that has been described in this thread is likely to become the rule rather than the exception.

Just think what it would have been like if they had adopted the two refs ,one in each half, that was the favourite idea of some people a couple of years ago.this lot would have been doing at least conference level games now.

10 times? I don't think so. Last season when we whipped your Townie asses at Brimsdown's ground, the official attendance was given as 325. We thought, hang on how did they manage that? Did they cremate a few and leave them in a pot behind the goal..

The crowd without added season tickets and being seasonally adjusted, was probably around 70 less. Considering we had around 60 fans at the match, then work the maths out..Listen, like Sheff Wed and Hull City..you are not as big as you like to think you are.

PS your theory about moaning/complaining getting things done hardly held sway on the fixture front did it.

Some [***!!***] trying to take over my moniker (Chablis) castigated me for whingeing re fixtures etc.

I still say isn't it odd that bouncing Bob E hasn't come on line to defend one or two decisions of late.

Did he get a freebie to Carlisle on Saturday or was he scoffing more Shepherd's pie at GWR.

Not long now!!!!!!!!
