And so the new season is here

Right then, just a day until the season kicks off and our longest journey of the season (in the league at least) kicks things off with the trip to Dover. They like us have fallen somewhat from grace since their time in the Conference and now find themselves with financial difficulties. Although the bookies have them set as second favourites for the division, from what I've read most of their supporters think it will be a season of consolidation rather than an all out blitz on the title. Boasting a big fan base, this could be one of the biggests crowds we will see this season and will make a change to be heavily outnumbered when travelling away from home.

How Slough will fare, both in the game tomorrow and the season as a whole is unknown which makes this an exciting season. Having kept the majority of the squad who won 18 of the last 21 league matches last season, we all know that when the team clicks it is a force to be reckoned with. Much to our pleasant surprise we still have Ian Hodges at the club who will be a big player for us once again. Eddie seems to have recruited wisely, with James Saulsbury looking like a very decent player, and persuading Josias to join after being released by Oxford United has been great business, on the basis of what we've seen from him pre-season.

We appear to have some depth to the squad now, with the likes of Alex Haddow, Danny Steer, Nick Gyoury and Ryan Spencer seemingly unable to break into the first team. We have two very promising goalkeepers in the squad, and they will need our support this season. If mistakes are to be made, I would rather they were mistakes of youth which can be learned from rather than still making mistakes as an experienced keeper as happened with Alan Foster last season. Another player who needs our verbal support is Matt Miller. His confidence was severely dented last season with the goals drying up. With our backing rather than barracking and jokes he could be firing in 20 goals this season and with the loss of Tony Boot that is what we need from him.

And so to our opening fixture. A 100 mile trip to East Kent with anticiaption for the season ahead. In August last year when travelling to Epsom & Ewell I had little idea of how things would go or what quality the opposition would be. Even after coming away with a 4-1 victory we still weren't sure of how representative they were of teams in the division. That we later beat them 7-1 and they finished bottom just goes to show you can't make too many judgements on the first result of the season. That said, a win tomorrow would represent a great start to the season and build a platform for the two home matches that follow against two of the less fancied teams, Harrow and Wealdstone.

So come on then, make sure you've got your voices with you tomorrow. Our vocal support is a bonus to the players so lets make sure we're singing loud, backing every single player in a Slough shirt for 90 minutes and with a bit of luck we can make the journey back happy that three points are on the board. Interesting times ahead.
