More players outgoing

I'm not sure that Dave Sargant, that well known left-back/left wing back/ left-sided midfield player, would be particularly concerned at Dean Hooper's arrival, Rob. Dean is a right-back.

I imagine that Dave would be more concerned that Scott Cousins appears to have got the call as first-choice left-back.

Ah, but was he ever really given a proper chance? These younger players must be given time, although in saying that, I think Will Davies is 24. Ayres wasn't good enough 2 years ago.

And, by the way, Scott Atkinson is now playing in Bishop's Stortford's first team.

I don't know anything about football but I do know that there are a number of possible reasons why individual players 'sever their ties' with a football club.

As far as the centre back births are concerned, we have Seeby, Campbell and De Souza, backed up by the utility players, Zoricich and Thomas to cover those two positions. That may have influenced the manager as well as Ayres and Davies in their decision to seek first-team football elswhere, or whatever.

It's equally interesting in the midfield where, for the four first-choice positions, we have Matt 'Matty' Hann, Attwood, Wraight, Southon, Parker, Sarll, Okai, Jones [Matt] and Knight, again with Zoricich and Thomas as utility cover.

Pressure? They don't know the meaning of the word, these people. They should have my job.

On performances so far, Zorocich should not be used as a utility player. Together with Seeby, the two of them are easily our best option in the centre of defence.

And you've left out out Deacon from the midfield.

Hi Woody.

My description of Zoricich & Thomas as 'utility players' was not meant as criticism of t'lads in any way. They both did particularly well over the last few weeks of last season and, to their credit, they have each been used in several different positions in the side.

As far as selection is concerned, I don't know enough about football so I'll leave those issues to the manager!

Greg Deacon? You're right, I didn't mention the youngster. I picture him on holiday for two months in Thailand. I have no doubt that he is treating his body as a temple. No alchohol or any of that other stuff. In bed by 10[pm] every night. A 7 mile run every morning. Training with Phouket United twice each week and fitness work once a week with Athletico Bangkok. A consummate professional. Bless 'im.

Ah yes, forgot Sargent was left-sided (must have been watching from the 'wrong' end <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />).

The centre-backs still worry me, how long before Campbell breaks a toenail and is out for the rest of the season? And as for goalscorers, without Lee Clarke we look a bit lightweight to say the least.

A trifle negative there, Rob, if I may say so.

If I was the worrying kind, I would be worried, too. It seems to me that the manager sees Clarke and McBreen as the first choice strikers backed up by Crawshaw. And he said in The Oserver last week that Parker and Matt 'Matty' Hann can cover up front if required. No reference to Cogger and Bullet, however. No news of McBreen's 'contractual dispute', I suppose?

Phew! I nearly slipped out of my new approach for a minute there. It's O.K.. I'm all right now. It's all going to be fine. It doesn't matter.

An interesting few weeks ahead.

Hi JKif.

I believe that Sargant preferred to play as a wing-back and the last player who wore the yeller&blue who could do that was Mark Rooney. Dave was no Rooney. I think that he was pressed to play left-back and there, he was no Peter Risley, but then few are.

For me, he seemed to get dragged out of position a little too often from left-back but, a good honest player, and a nice chap. Good luck to him at [North]Woood from me.

I rate Scott Cousins.

Err....

Matt 'Matty' Hann is a right-sided player, Rob.

Not impressed with Parys, then? No Parker in your starting line-up?

You clearly think that Sarll[y?] has had a better pre-season than Gary Wraight?

Opinions, Rob. It's all about opinions. Manager? Piece of cake, that job.

Matty played wide left against London Colney, did he? I stand corrected, Rob. Clearly a versatile player. Equally adept on either flank as proven against, err.... errr.... London Colney. I didn't make that game, Rob, but I have heard one or two reports of Matt's performance that evening.

So. On the evidence of a performance on the left against Mighty London Colney, Matt 'Matty' Hann gets your vote in that position in the Nationwide South ahead of Parys Okai.

Parker & Okai up front. Hmmnn. A courageous decision, Rob.
