Romford 2 SACFC Res 3

Romford FC (2)2 SACFC Res (1)3

Scorers - Zorocich, Parkinson, Ayres.

Saints opponents tonight were Romford from the Eastway Essex Senior League. Included in the Saints line-up tonight were ex-Hitchin and Braintree defender James Ayres, triallists Liam Wright, Peter Afolayan, Ross Hunt and City midweek youth striker 'Bullet' Parkinson.

After a relatively uneventful first 33 minutes, things livened up, when from a neat lay off from Ben Cogger, Chris Zorocich lashed a superb rising shot from 25 yards into the top right hand corner of the goal to give the Romford goalkeeper no chance. 4 mins later, however, Romford were back on terms and on the stroke of half time, then proceeded to go in front via a free header.

As the second half progressed, Saints came more and more into the game and on 60 mins, from a through ball from Thomas, Parkinson twisted and turned past three defenders before rifling the ball low to the goalkeeper's right into the corner of the net for the equaliser. Saints continued to press and 3 mins from time were awarded a free kick 30 yards out. Thomas slipped the ball to the right, from where Zorocich powered in a shot at goal, which the Romford goalkeeper was unable to hold and Ayres followed up to hit the winner.

The Saints line-up for tonight's match, which was 40 mins each way, was -

Finn; Zorocich, Ayres, Davies, Riley; Attwood, Thomas, Smith A., Wright; Cogger, Parkinson.

Subs- Afolayan, Hunt.

Thanks for that, Rob, although, actually, I was aware that he played on Tuesday against Barnet. I was there. I was interested to hear whether there was any news of t'lad on Wednesday.

Yes, that James Ayres is familiar with the home dressing room at t'Park from each of the last two pre-seasons before 'gaining first team experience' at Hitchin and then The Mighty Iron.

Chris Zoricich has not scored in a senior match.

I hope you're right about Dean Fenton, Rob. I don't think that we will see Butler, Standen, Abbott, Jenner or the one who played up front [in the] second half against Luton and at Dunstable again this season.

I had forgotten that Zoricicicich is in his second spell. I'm too young to remember him from first time around.

Let me try to help, RtS.

Vince Buck. Nice chap. He was the Coach to the last season's successful Reserves side. He is 'helping out' with the coaching at St Albans City FC this season. He was assisting Steve Castle in the dug-out at Dunstable Town.

Having asked a couple of people in authority, I understand that this season's Reserves team will be 'run' by a small but perfectly formed Committee comprising Miguel [Official title 'Player Coach'] Thommo [Official title 'Player Assistant Manager] and Chris Zorocicicicich.

But then, some things change. Other things never change, of course.

Once again AFF you are spot on. I think that if Vince Buck was described as 'the Manager' in any way, shape or form he would be most upset.

As for the term 'the reserves'I'm not sure that it's strictly accurate. Bunch of triallists, squad players and those who won't be around at the start of the season is more like it.

Let's see who turns out for 'the reserves' in the Capital League's 14, might be 16, mid-week games (excluding of course those games against the pro sides). I predict that it'll be very different from the side/s that have turned out so far.

Still it's a higher level so those 14, or 16, games will probably take a lot more out of the chaps than the 40 odd played last season.

Still that's just my opinion, and I know nothing about football.
