Charlton Athletic Rob?

Would that be Charlton XI? Still nothing on their web-site, I suppose? Apart from the 1st team pre-season friendly vs. Chievo Verona on Friday, August 6th?

Hitchin Town will be a good test.

And you and webbo aren't even veterans, Zeal! <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Gone are the days when 5 or 6,000 would come down and see an Arsenal side with Wright, Bergkamp and Platt, or a Spurs side with Campbell, Baardsen etc.

Come to think of it, those who turn up most weeks to watch the Mighty Saints would only be interested in the formation of the side in the pre-season, and as long as they're given good workouts against decent opposition, then there's no problem.

But these pre-season friendlies are doing nothing for the wanted average attendance of around 500 (?) for the coming season. And no-one seems to realise that.

You may have made an interesting point there, GHA.

I don't know anything about football but in my view, the pre-season friendlies against Fisher, Dunstable, Barnet and Hitchin were arranged to provide appropriate opposition to properly test the side that the manager is putting together for the forthcoming season. That's good in terms of the football.

I imagine that the PSFs against the XIs from Luton, Watford, Millwall and Charlton have been arranged in order to raise funds. There can be very little that the manager learnt from the two of those games that we have seen. He will always be learning, of course, so it would be better to say that the drubbings received from Luton and Watford did not justify the little that he learnt.

I don't imagine that these games are designed to 'showcase The Mighty Saints and Clarence Park.

I'd guess the gate against Luton to be 500 and 250 for the Watford game.

For example, Rob, the 'Forthcoming Fixtures' board on Hatfield Road states that we are simply playing Millwall, and not a Millwall XI or Millwall reserves.

You or I, Rob, know more than your average citizen in St. Albans with regards to City and the forthcoming fixtures. But I'm presuming that the average citizen would hate to be mislead. You can't deny it hasn't happened before, or isn't happening now.

The little publicity the games receive, that is.

But GHA, if a passing citizen were to see Millwall, Watford, Luton or Charlton Athletic on the fixtures board, they might be forgiven for thinking that the 1st team of those clubs was coming to the City.

Said citizen might then check on the fixtures page thingy of the web-site and see the 'XI' after each name and think to him, or her, self "A mixture of 1st team and Reserve players, perhaps."

They might be re-assured to read in the local press that 'A number of players with 1st team experience are expected to play'.

They might. But only once.

As a casual football 'fan', they might not think to look on the web-sites of our opponenets to see confirmation that it's a Reserve team fixture.
