I am doing a few practice runs for the new diary. With a whole new look and content. Any constructive comments are appreciated. Thanks

Chesham 1 Wycombe Wanderers 0 (Friendly)

15th July 2004

I got to the ground and watched a little cricket outside before entering the ground (mainly due to the gates not being open until 30 minutes before the game) First impressions of the ground were it is very bitty just different sized concrete steps everywhere!!!

Two tea bars open which I thought was very odd for a friendly as there were not enough people there to justify them both. Good decent sized coffee for 60p though.

The Chesham Club House "The Chess Suite" is pretty good. Not impressed with the framed newspaper articles of them beating Windsor 5-1 at Abingdon though!!!

It was a nightmare having to listen to "The Greatest Football Anthems In the World Ever" before the game!!!!

Overall the game was pretty poor. Wycombe only fielded three first teamers and didn't look very good. Chesham held their own and on the 45th minute a goal by John Lawford won the game for them. It was a beautiful 30 yard free kick that the very dodgy Wycombe keeper hardly noticed.

Mark Dawber was named in the squad. He was there but didn't play.

Tony Adams sat down in the dug out for about a minute and then he just seemed to dissapear. Don't know where he went.

All in all not a bad day out for a friendly.

This is an article about the game from: www.chairboys.ndirect.co.uk:

Wednesday 14th July 2004

Chesham United 1

Wycombe Wanderers 0

Friendly

Wanderers went down 1-0 at Chesham in their second pre-season friendly of the 2004/5 campaign. After the previous Friday's 2-1 defeat at Beaconsfield SYCOB where Wanderers fielded seven triallists, this time around it was mixture of triallists, youth team players and a sprinkling of First Team squad players that took on The Generals. Reserve Team Coach Peter Cawley and Youth Team boss Gary Smith took charge of touchline duties with Tony Adams watching from the stand.

The triallists included former Torquay United trainee goalkeeper Scott Corderoy. However, the youngster mainly had an evening to forget as he was caught at the near post for the only goal of the game when John Lawford swung a free-kick in from the right flank just before the half-time interval.

Performing at right-back was the unknown figure of Steve Ball while in midfield Joe Burnell was making his first appearance in a Wycombe shirt following his summer move from Bristol City. The third triallist was striker Stephen Hughes who is a local born lad who came through the Brentford Youth system. A fourth triallist, striker Ian Hodge from Slough Town, was expected to appear but pulled out at the last moment.

Wanderers also introduced several members of their First Year Apprentice intake for the 2004/5 season during the second-half, while former Wimbledon trainee Shahed Ahmed replaced Nathan Tyson who picked up a minor knock during the first period. Ahmed made a number of nippy runs down the left flank during the second half, while on the opposite wing Youth Teamer Ikechi Anya made a similar impression.

Former Norwich and Watford midfielder Clint Easton was originally thought to be only triallist from the Beaconsfield game to be given a second chance but he did not appear despite earlier reports suggesting he did. Instead the relatively unknown Russell Martin replaced Matt Bloomfield at the break. Martin is a youngster who hails from Varndean College, Brighton and has also abeen involved with England at Schoolboy level.

The nearest Wanderers came to equalising came in the dying moments when a cross from the right from Ball saw Ahmed head against the foot of the near post. Meanwhile, Chesham had earlier chances at the other end to have made the winning margin more comfortable.

The pre-season games continue at Dorchester Town on Saturday 17th July before Portsmouth visit Adams Park on Tuesday 20th July. It's then a return to Dorset for a game with Weymouth on Saturday 24th July.

Final Score: Chesham United 1 Wycombe 0 Wycombe:

Scott Corderoy, Steve Ball, Andy Riley, Joe Burnell (sub HT Liam Grier), Tom Cadmore, Scott Marshall (sub HT Steven Gregory), Jonny Dixon (sub 80 D'juvane Davidson), Matt Bloomfield (sub HT Russell Martin), Nathan Tyson (sub HT Shahed Ahmed), Stephen Hughes (sub 73 Ikechi Anya), Matt Fox
