Just watched Bob Harrop referreeing at a youth tournament at Jackey Bakers today. What a man still earning the respect of every one after all these years.Top man IMO one of the great characters who have served the area in my lifetime Certainly would be my choice of capt in a greatest ever Margate team. Now there is a dgood discussion topic THE GREATEST EVER MARGATE TEAM or has it already been done.Who was the greatest forward .My choice although he was not here for long would be the great John Fahy from the sixties. This is just an idea something to disccuss and get away from all the useless claptrap that is going on at the moment!!!!!!!COME ON YOU BLUES UP THE GATE!!!!!!

[color:"blue"]I've only supported the 'Gate for 10 years, but as a schoolboy I followed the Rams. One 'Gate player in that era was outstanding & IMO 'head & shoulders' above anyone else to don a white shirt - that man was Tommy Jenkins. He wasn't really a goalscorer, but he did devastate opposition defences. What were your opinions of him as 'Gate fans?

Tommy Jenkins was a brilliant winger. Never saw him play for us but remember seeing him on TV playing regularly for Southampton in a forward line alongside Terry Paine, Mick Channon and Ron Davies.

If the club had a better winger before Tommy Jenkins he must have been something else, there certainly haven't been any since.

(Think he went us-Reading-Saints)

I remember David Hills and whilst I have the utmost respect for Bob Harrop and indeed all of the others mentioned in this topic, you can't get away from Peter Vandepeer being the guv'nor. Don't forget, he played as an amateur against defences of ex-pros who were still earning as much money playing in the Kent League as they could have done in the Football League in those days. If you want to talk about goalkeepers, current team excepted, what about Peter Peters, and if you want to talk wingers you have got to bring in Len Dolding and Vince Wright.

Centre-halves, again present incumbent excepted, there was always Brian Moffatt and for a very short time the classy ex-Wolves man Ray Chatham.

Others who always spring to mind include Ronnie Martell, a local player who gave the club wonderful service and Dave O'Callaghan, a real character.

The list is endless
